Zhang Cuiying, a traditional Chinese artist who is also a Falun Gong practitioner, concluded the Romanian leg of her world tour art exhibition in Bucharest on 11th of March 2004.

Ms Zhang’s paintings received a warm welcome from the audience. People were so impressed that many of them came back to the exhibition a second time and brought their friends. Because it was so popular, the organizer prolonged the exhibition for an extra day until March the 11th 2004.

Experts were very impressed with Ms. Zhang’s paintings. One old architect visited her exhibition twice and gave a great response to her paintings. He praised her work in terms of conception, content, colour and style of painting. “Supernormal, impressive,” he said, “It is more than a pleasure for a professional to enjoy the diversity and tranquillity of her paintings. Excellent integration of masculinity, femininity and gentility.” Several others nearby nodded their agreement.

However, the Chinese authorities showed a very different attitude towards the paintings. Last year, Ms. Zhang had to cancel an exhibition in Bucharest after a protest by officials from the Chinese Embassy. “I like Ms Zhang’s paintings very much and regard her as an ambassador for Chinese culture” one onlooker said, “I could not see the point in stopping her exhibition here last year.”

Other people showed their sympathy and anger after they heard about the persecution Ms Zhang suffered in China. “We experienced a similar Communist dictatorship here. Fortunately they are not here any more.” A young couple said. A retired Christian lady showed strong interest in the paintings and the story of Ms Zhang. She learned the Falun Gong exercises and said “God led me here.” Many people asked about Ms Zhang’s next exhibition in Romania.
