On July the 20th 1999, the former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin began a nationwide persecution of Falun Dafa. Five years have passed since and today there are over 1000 documented cases of practitioners being tortured to death for practising Falun Gong.
In order to draw peoples attention, practitioners in Gothenburg held three days of activities to inform the public about the crimes against human rights carried out by the Chinese authorities. In Bältesspännarparken (a park) practitioners held a realistic live torture exhibition that illustrated some of the means used by Chinese police to torture Falun Gong practitioners. One practitioner had been locked inside a small cage. A second one had sharp bamboo sticks pressed in under his nails and a third
one had been hung up and beaten. After seeing the exhibition, many people immediately signed a petition in support of the persecuted Chinese practitioners.
Practitioners also delivered speeches where they explained the background and facts about the persecution and the reason for their activities. Some practitioners demonstrated the exercices, in sharp contrast to the savage torture. There was also a performance by the lead singer in the band Yellow Express, who sang songs about the persecution and about practising Falun Dafa.
