Ms. Sun Xiuhua, 47, lived in Nong'an County, Jilin Province. In October 1999, police arrested her when she was on her way to Beijing to appeal for the rights of Falun Gong with another practitioner from her home village. They took her to the Nong'an Detention Centre where she was illegally detained for 22 days. They released her only after extorting more than 6,000 Yuan (1) in fines. In January 2000, several policemen from the local police station suddenly intruded into Ms. Sun's house and illegally abducted her while she was reading Falun Gong books. Again, they sent her to the Nong'an Detention Centre and released her after forcing her to pay another 6,000 Yuan in fines. Due to the persecution of her body, the enormous pressure on her mind, and the large amount of fines she was forced to pay, Ms. Sun started to suffer both physically and mentally, and her health deteriorated day by day. Tragically, she died on June 16, 2004.
