Hong Dongqiang, male, who enrolled in Wuhan University in 1998 majoring in Architecture, was arrested in March 2001 when he went to Beijing to appeal. He was sentenced to forced labour and is still detained.
Lin Xun, female, born on February 27, 1978, enrolled in Nankai University [a key university in Tianjin City] in 1997, majoring in Computer Automatic-System Control. At the end of April 2000, the Security Department of Nankai University forced her to "break away" from Falun Gong [to give up practicing]. After refusing, the university suspended her from school for one year. Furthermore, the Security Department, along with the police from Tianjin City Police Department, searched Lin's dorm room (room 520, dorm 15). In May 2001, when the suspension term expired, the university again declared that she must demonstrate an attitude of breaking away from Falun Gong; otherwise, she
would not be allowed to resume her education.
On June 15, 2001, a female student from Lin's dorm called her and said, "Graduation is coming, and we classmates are going to get together." She invited Lin to return to school for the meeting. On June 18, Lin returned to Tianjin City. The next day, in the school restaurant, she was abducted on site by the university Security Department and the local police. She was then sentenced to two-and-a-half years' forced labour and is now detained in Class No.10, Section No. 1, Women's Division No. 4, in Banqiao Forced Labour Camp of Tianjin City.
In August, 2001, Nankai University sent someone to her home, along with police from Jingye Police Station in Guta District of Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province, to give notice of her failure in her studies, and transferred her residence registration back to her home, Jinzhou City.
With the exception of August 15 and August 18, 2001, when she had two brief meetings with her family, Banqiao Forced Labour Camp has not allowed her family to visit her. Her family was not allowed to give her money and items they had brought her either. Since then, nothing has been heard about her. It has been said that she is forced to do labour for more than 18 hours per day there.
These young university students are suffering persecution and imprisonment by Jiang Zemin's political followers simply because they upheld their belief in "Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance."
We call upon the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to pay close attention to these cases.
