Ms Bai Wanling was a 39-year-old Dafa practitioner from Fukang City, Xinjiang Province. She died of persecution on May 31, 2004 for her belief in Dafa.

Bai Wanling started to practise Falun Gong in May 1998. On February 15, 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal and was arrested in Tiananmen Square. She was taken back to her hometown to be detained. The staff members from the Jiuyunjie Town government took turns monitoring her every move 24 hours a day. They talked to her, did not allow her to sleep, and abused her with foul language. Despite this, she always patiently clarified the truth to these staff members. Later she was sent to Fukang City Detention Centre where she was detained for 15 days.

In May 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal for the second time. She was arrested along with many other practitioners who also went to Beijing to appeal. They were brutally tortured by Beijing police. Later the police sent her to the liaison office of Hebei Province. When the liaison office found she was not from Hebei Province, she was released.

In July 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal for the third time. She unfurled a banner reading "Truthfulness-Benevolence-Forbearance" in Tiananmen Square. She was arrested and sent to Huairou County Detention Centre. She went on a hunger strike and was able to get out of detention four days later with her righteous thoughts. After she returned home, she was arrested by local authorities and sent to Fukang City Detention Centre where she was detained for nearly three months.

After she was released, she kept clarifying the truth to people around her. She was arrested again when she and other practitioners went to Qitai County to distribute truth-clarification materials. While being detained in Qitai County Detention Centre, she went on a hunger strike. The police took her to a hospital to be force-fed. The police ordered the medical staff to insert a hard plastic tube through her nose to her stomach. Every time after she was force-fed, her nose would bleed profusely. Later she was transferred to Changjizhou Detention Centre where she went on with her hunger strike. One policeman there once force-fed a big bowl of milk powder and a big bowl of rice soup to her stomach. The witnesses were all stunned by the police's brutality. However, that policeman said, "Well, she's special, so we need to treat her specially."

During the three months detention there, she was on hunger strike most of the time, and she was force-fed frequently. As a result, her lungs were severely injured. In March 2001, the local police produced a labour education document and asked her to sign, without informing her family. She firmly refused. The police then handcuffed her and forcibly sent her to Wulaba Women's Labour Camp in Xinjiang Province. As soon as she arrived in the camp, she was forced to stand for two days and one night. Her feet and legs were all swollen. They also asked her to curse Dafa and Teacher, but were rejected. Policewoman Ba Xiaomei took off all her clothing and shoes, and shocked her body with two electric batons simultaneously. While shocking her, Ba Xiaomei asked if she would give up her belief in Dafa, she simply refused. Ba Xiaomei then kept shocking her till 4 a.m. in the morning. Afterwards, her whole body was covered with bruises.

In the labour camp, all practitioners were monitored by drug-addicts around the clock. The practitioners were not allowed to talk to each other, nor they were allowed any quiet time to rest or think. If practitioners refused to cooperate, they would be met with kicks and fists. Under the harsh condition, Bai Wanling's health deteriorated. She coughed terribly, and she often felt cold during the day, and had high fevers during the night. However, she was still forced to do hard labour. Later, her condition became worse and worse. At the strong request from fellow practitioners, the guards finally allowed her to rest a bit, and spared her from the hard labour. Several months later, the guards took her to the hospital for a medical examination. The doctors suggested she be checked into the hospital immediately and be treated intensively. However, the police took her back to the hospital, and informed her family to pay 3,000 yuan before she could be released. Her family refused to pay. In June 2002, the labour camp authorities finally allowed her to be taken home. At that time, she was already skin and bones. She is 1.63 meters (about 5.35 feet) tall, but her weight was only 86 lbs. She was extremely weak and had to lie in bed all day long. Even so, the heads of the Fukang City "610 Office" Zhang Xinguo and Cai Sanxiang, as well as police from Jiuyunjie Police Station, still kept harassing Bai Wanling. They tapped her phone and all her relatives' phones. They also often went to threaten them. Zhang Xinguo once said to Bai Wanling, "If you don't cooperate, I'll send you back to the labour camp. See, we never get any illness if we treat you this way."

The police often ordered her neighbours to monitor her family members. Sometimes the police would break into her home in the middle of he night, forcibly ransacking her home and illegally arresting her family members. Her family was living in a constant fear. Bai Wanling's parents are both Dafa practitioners in their 70's. Her mother was already very saddened by the fact that she suffered so much in the labor camp. Now that she was so frequently harassed by the police, she finally collapsed and remained bedridden. Under such conditions, the police still forcibly took away Bai Wanling's brother. Under the constant harassment and tremendous pressure, Bai's mother passed away in September 2001. At the time of her mother's death, she was still detained in the labour camp.

After her mother's death, the police still kept harassing her father. Each time her father went out, he would be followed. One time the elderly man went to another city to visit his sister and was forcibly taken back from his sister's home. He clarified the truth to the police many times. One policeman said, "We're only a dog ordered to bark and bite." Since he was constantly harassed, he could not study the Falun Dafa teachings or do the exercises regularly. As a result, his health deteriorated. He passed away in October 2004. On the day of his funeral, the police set up an ambush near his home, attempting to catch his two other daughters (also practitioners) who were forced to leave home to avoid persecution.

After both of her parents were persecuted to death, the police kept harassing Bai Wanling's brother and sister-in-law every day. They deceived the couple into going to a brainwashing class and detained them there.

In May 2004, Bai's family sent her to a hospital to be treated. During her hospitalization, the police still went to her brother's home asking about her whereabouts. Bai Wanling passed away in hospital on May 31, 2004.

After Bai Wanling passed away, the police went around to spread rumours claiming that she and her parents died because they practised Falun Gong.
