Statement of Dr. Robert Riccabona, representative of the group, regarding
the persecution of Falun Gong members in China
December 5, 2001
Amnesty International’s members view with increasing sorrow and concern the gruesome persecution of members of the Falun Gong in China.
On the one hand this concerns recurring, never-ending reports of tortures. That is the reason for Amnesty International’s efforts to intervene worldwide against these tortures and includes the present campaign “Active against Torture.”
Furthermore, Amnesty International views the Falun Gong movements as without force and, because of their belief system and convictions, looks upon Falun Gong victims as persecuted individuals.
That is the particular reason why the religious group at Amnesty International is intervening on their behalf, including these people in the action “Candle of Hope.” But it is not only limited to that. This action will raise awareness for these victims in religious circles.
