On 6th December 2001, the Chinese consulate in Gothenburg gave a presentation about Falun Gong at a university of commercial studies in Gothenburg. First they showed the self-immolation video footage from CCTV (Chinese Central Television) containing the notorious lies about Falun Gong and Teacher Li Hongzhi. After the film, a woman from the consulate read a long printed report from the propaganda created by the Chinese government. Having finished reading, they wanted the audience to take a look at the posters they had put up on the walls. Practitioners among the audience wanted to ask some questions, which was something they had not planned at all.
A practitioner asked, “I have been a registered nurse for 20 years and I find it very strange to see in the film showing that a child, who was so burned badly, could speak despite the fact that she had a tracheotomy, (which is an opening through the throat in order to help a patient to breath). In my unit at the hospital, patients who have had a tracheotomy cannot speak at all”.
The lecturer and the vice consul struggled very hard but couldn’t give an explanation. In desperation they replied, “Ask the doctor!”
A freelance film producer asked, “I have been working with film making for many years. How could this be filmed so well, with steady close-up pictures/shootings, as if it was done with a closely placed camera on a tripod stand? Who did this film? It looks very staged …”
Before she finished her question, she was interrupted by the vice-consul who now became irritated, “I can… I can… I can tell you about it. There are several cameras that monitor Tiananmen Square every day.”
The film producer said: “They can’t be from the monitor cameras because the “zoomed” close-up pictures of the child’s face or on other victims are very free from obstructions and with so many police around! It looks very much staged and “shoot and cut ” to me. Again, my question is, who did this film? Is it the police who did this?”
They argued, “There were a lot of police around. They are there to protect people. There were also some foreign journalists who filmed.” One practitioner mentioned that the foreign journalists announced that the film was not from them because their equipment were all confiscated by the police before the “self-immolation” incident started.
The vice-consul however had not studied his own propaganda well enough, because his explanation was totally different. He insisted it was surveillance cameras that the police had at Tiananmen Square. When the film producer repeated her questions about how a surveillance camera could shoot such good close-ups, the vice consul couldn’t hold himself any more and shouted, ”Such technical questions you can ask the police! … You can ask SECURITAS! (A security company in Sweden) They can answer your question! Such a silly question!” The audience was all laughing.
These representatives from the Chinese consulate started to talk irrationally. They shouted and repeated like parrots when they were faced with the following questions:
“You said the police protects people, how come the police beat me up during the peaceful appeal at Tiananmen Square? What you are doing now is ‘samhällsomstörtande verksamhet’ (‘subversive activity, or disrupting social order’) in Sweden”.
“Why is the Chinese government against Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance? They can even torture an eight month old baby and his mother to death?”
“You said Falun Gong practitioners are forbidden to take medicine. I practise Falun Gong and I have never heard that. I used to take medicine all my life. I was a very sick person. When I started to practise Falun Gong I became a healthy person. For five years now I haven’t taken any medicine, that is because I became a healthy person.”
By this time, the representatives wanted nothing but to finish their presentation as quickly as possible. They tried to persuade the audience to take a look at their poster on the walls.
A Chinese practitioner got the chance to be the last one to ask questions:
“Being a Chinese, I love China and the Chinese people. Just because of that, I feel so sorry that Falun Gong is persecuted in China. This persecution reminds me of the propaganda during the Culture Revolution. Within 24 hours, president Liu Shaoqi became number.1 enemy of the country because of propaganda. Now we know it was wrong and his reputation was restored after his death. Look at these pictures on the walls, how much truth can it be in this propaganda?….”
She was then interrupted by the representatives from the consulate aggressively. But, the practitioner continued, “I have nothing against you personally, so don’t be so hostile to me. I know you are doing your job and you dare not say anything else than you were asked to say. You may check each other now. If what the propaganda said are not lies, why don’t you allow journalists, international organisations to go into China to do investigation themselves and check if what you say is correct? What are you afraid of?”
The representative interrupted her again and said that people were welcome to go there and see for themselves about Falun gong. The practitioner responded, “But the journalists have been kicked out and we can’t get a visa to China! Why? What are you hiding?”
The representatives were just about to start their lies again when the host announced the seminar was finished. The consulate invited the audience to take a look at posters on the walls, but most of the audience walked straight away from the propaganda. After the presentation, practitioners talked friendly with the Chinese representatives since some of them didn’t know the truth at all. One student from the audience came to a practitioner and said to her they could see through the propaganda by the Chinese government. “We are no fools,” she smiled.
