Falun Gong practitioner Mr Wan Liji, 34, died as a result of persecution, leaving behind his four-year-old daughter, who is now being cared for by her maternal grandmother. Liji used to be a member of the special police at the Nanchang Public Security Bureau and part of the Donghu Police Squad. He was mentally and physically persecuted for five years for practising Falun Dafa. He passed away at 6:40 p.m. on February 9, 2004.
Wan Liji was illegally persecuted since July 20, 1999. His work unit did not allow him to work, to go home, or to visit his mother, who was imprisoned in a forced labour camp. Occasionally, when he did get home for a couple of days, at least two people were assigned to monitor his activities. He was totally deprived of personal freedom. Since he never agreed to give up practicing Falun Dafa, he was dismissed from his job in November 2000. After a year of harassment by his work unit, Wan Liji became very weak, and his weight fell from 170 jin (187 lb) to 90 jin (99 lb).
In December 2000, Wan Liji went to Beijing to explain the truth about Falun Dafa to the authorities. Police from Nanchang City arrested him and sent him to a detention centre, where he was beaten. Eventually, he became so weakened by the mistreatment that he could no longer eat and vomited whenever he ingested anything. He suffered from a constant stomach ache and could no longer stand up straight.
His family members asked for his release many times, but the authorities replied with a threatening tone, "If he does not 'transform' (i.e., give up his Falun Gong practice), he will not be released even after he dies." Under those conditions, Wan Liji was detained and tortured for over half a year. In the meantime, his wife and five-month-old baby did not have any means of support.
In May 2001, he finally returned home. Although he was very weak, Wan Liji had to look for a job. During the next three years he tried his hand at everything: newspaper deliveryman, heavy labour construction work, restaurant work, and security guard. Since the "610 Office" and other institutions never ceased to torment him, he was harassed every few days. The police called him even at midnight. Wherever he found a job, the police followed him and forced his employers to fire him. The police also confiscated his household registration permit and his citizenship ID card.
The "610 Office" staff deprived him of his most basic human rights. During 2002 and 2003, they sent him for detention or brainwashing classes three times, where he was tortured intensively. For nearly five years Wan Liji lived in an environment that tortured his body and mind. He left this world on February 9, 2004, leaving his then three-year-old daughter behind. On the second day following his death, his nose was found to be bleeding, a condition that continued until his body was cremated.
