1. Mr. Kong Qinghuang

Mr. Kong Qinghuang, 33, resided in Jianshui, Yun'nan Province. He was Deputy Mayor of Lin'an Town, Jianshui County, Yun'nan Province. In 2000 Lin'an Town's People's Congress concluded on April 7, 2000. On that day, Mr. Kong courageously clarified the truth about Falun Gong to the local people based on his own experiences of the practice. He shared with them the fact that he had become a perfectly healthy man since he started to practise Falun Gong. He also confessed that he became an honest government official because Falun Gong helped him to improve his morality.

But the local authorities "showed their appreciation" by putting Mr. Kong under house arrest, subjecting him to brainwashing, and illegally ransacking his home. On April 9, 2000, the local police abducted Mr. Kong Qinghuang and incarcerated him in Jianshui County Detention Centre. The local authorities accused him of trying to agitate people by appealing to their superstitions and removed him from his post as the Deputy Mayor of Lin'an Town. When he was released and returned to work on May 9, 2000, he had to deliver newspapers and perform other menial duties.

On June 9, 2000, Mr. Kong went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. When he returned home on June 28, Jianshui County's "610 Office" and State Security Brigade abducted him and detained him in Jianshui County Detention Centre for the second time. Mr. Kong went on a hunger strike as a peaceful way to protest the persecution. After he had been on the hunger strike for over ten days, the torturers at the detention centre started to punitively force-feed (1) him, repeating the torture every four to five days.

At the beginning of August, the detention centre stopped the punitive force-feeding and resorted to giving him infusions every five to six days. On August 25, the staff finally checked him into the hospital where the doctor took several vials of blood from him for analysis. After Mr. Kong was admitted to the hospital, his health rapidly deteriorated and he became extremely frail and weak.

On September 1, Mr. Kong Qinghuang agreed to eat, but the next day he suddenly went into a coma. The hospital invited a medical expert to help with the diagnosis. The doctors found that Mr. Kong's skin had turned yellow for unknown reasons. They concluded that he must have been poisoned. Mr. Kong Qinghuang died at 9:00 p.m. on September 3, 2000.

2. Ms. Huang Jumei

Ms. Huang was born in 1954. She was a labourer at Kunming City's Civil Administration Company. Prior to practising Falun Gong, Ms. Huang suffered from high blood pressure and more than 20 other illnesses. She was so ill that she had to quit her job at the early age of 26. Tormented by illness for many years, Ms. Huang would lose her temper very easily and often bickered with her mother-in-law. The atmosphere at home was often tense and stressful. After Ms. Huang started to practise Falun Gong in 1997, all of her illnesses went away without a trace and she became healthier each day. She became very kind and affectionate and was known for her consideration for other people. She started to get along very well with her mother-in-law. The entire family began to enjoy warmth and happiness at home.

When Jiang Zemin started to persecute Falun Gong on July 20, 1999, she clarified the truth to the local people based on her own cultivation experiences. In 2002, the local police abducted Ms. Huang and put her in a detention centre, where they subjected her to many types of cruel torture. During the process, Ms. Huang's blood pressure surged to 280/120. The police did not notify her family of her precarious health until they put her into the hospital. Ms. Huang died shortly after she was admitted to the hospital.

3. Ms. Tan Zaizhi

Ms. Tan used to work for the Chinese Herbal Pharmacy in the Traditional Chinese Hospital in Kunming City, Yun'nan Province. Before Ms. Tan practised Falun Gong, she suffered from nephritis, a chronic inflammation of the kidney, and several other illnesses. Because she did not have enough money, she left her illnesses untreated. Her nephritis eventually turned into uremia, an accumulation in the blood of waste products normally eliminated in the urine that produces a severe toxic condition.

After Ms. Tan started to practise Falun Gong in 1997, all of her illnesses disappeared without any medical treatment. She became very healthy from then on. On February 14, 2000, the local police abducted her because she participated in a group exercise practice, and illegally detained her for 27 days. After she was released, the Traditional Chinese Hospital fired her from her job because she would not renounce Falun Gong. The area's "610 Office" and the local police not only put her under surveillance around the clock, but also went to her home and harassed her. They also pressured her husband, who worked at the Agriculture Bank, into making her stop practising Falun Gong, or they would suspend his salary. Her husband and her son gave in to their terrorist tactics and smashed her boom box and exercise tapes so that she could not practise the Falun Gong exercises. They also hid her Falun Gong books so that she could not read them any more. As a result, Ms. Tan's nephritis resurfaced, and her body became swollen. Her family plotted with a doctor and coaxed her to the hospital. They then held her to the bed while giving her infusions and drugs against her will. Their brutal acts caused her illness to accelerate, and Ms. Tan died at midnight on April 26, 2001.

4. Mr. Li Junqing

Mr. Li Junqing was born in May 1947. He was an employee at the Security Division of the Xiaolongtan Electricity Plant of Kaiyuan City's Electricity Bureau in Kaiyuan City, Yun'nan Province. Mr. Li Junqing witnessed and was impressed with the physical and spiritual improvements in his wife after she started to practise Falun Gong, so he read "Zhuan Falun", Falun Gong's main text.

In July 2002, Mr. Li Junqing travelled alone to Yanji while his wife was under illegal detention. On July 13, the local police in Yanji abducted him after finding several copies of Falun Gong truth-clarification materials. The Yanji police then sentenced him to serve time in Yinmahe Forced Labour Camp in Changchun City, Jilin Province. In October 2002, Mr. Li Junqing called his wife Ms. Lu Huiyi, who had already been released, from inside Yinmahe and talked to her on the phone for about three minutes, telling her that he would be released after the New Year 2003.

Shortly afterwards his wife received bad news. On December 17, 2002, Yinmahe Forced Labour Camp called his wife and told her that her husband had diabetes. After he was sick for four days, they sent him to the hospital for emergency resuscitation, but he died at 4:00 a.m. on December 17, 2002.

Mr. Li Junqing had always been very healthy. He had never had diabetes. Mr. Li Junqing's son and his brother went to Yinmahe Forced Labour Camp to pick up his cremated ashes, but the camp did not give them any medical report. The actual cause of his death remains a mystery.

5. Xie Hongyu

Mr. Xie was born in November 1978. He came from Yun'nan Province. He started to practise Falun Gong in 1998 while he was studying at the University of Science and Technology of China in Anhui Province. He conducted himself strictly according to Falun Gong's cultivation principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance, and became known as an excellent student at school. After Jiang Zemin's senseless persecution of Falun Gong began on July 20, 1999, Mr. Xie Hongyu went to Beijing three times with fellow practitioners to appeal for Falun Gong. As a result, the "610 Office" at school and the local police persecuted him. The Head of the Anhui Provincial Committee met with him once directly to try to coerce him into giving up his belief in Falun Gong. Because Mr. Xie was determined to maintain his personal belief, the school expelled him and made his father take him back to Yun'nan.

After Mr. Xie returned to his hometown, he was put under surveillance set up by his home province, district, country, township and village "610 Offices," as well as the local police. He also suffered from their repeated threats and harassments. In addition, Mojiang County and Xinfu Township established a special task team to make him renounce Falun Gong. They asked the county government leaders to be responsible for making him renounce Falun Gong. The authorities repeatedly had "talks" with him, where they took turns pressuring him and threatening him to try to force him to renounce Falun Gong. In May 2000, the State Security Brigade in Mojiang County illegally confiscated his Falun Dafa books and exercise music tapes. In December 2000, Mr. Xie was abducted from home and sent to the forced brainwashing class set up by Yun'nan Province's "610 Office" in Kunming.

Because of the excessive persecution from all levels of the "610 Office" in his hometown and the local police, Mr. Xie suffered immense psychological pressure for a long period of time. After he was released from the class, the "610 Offices" and the local police claimed that Mr. Xie suffered from a psychological disorder because he practised Falun Gong, and they put him in the hospital. Even while he was detained in the hospital, the "610 Offices" did not reduce their persecution against him. In March 2001, Yun'nan Province's "610 Office" formed a "lecture tour group." When the group traveled to the Simao District, they made a special trip to the hospital and tried to force him to renounce Falun Gong.

After Mr. Xie was released on August 9, 2001, he continued to be subjected to immense pressure from all sides, especially from his own family, who had fallen prey to Jiang Zemin and his henchmen's slanderous lies about Falun Gong. His family strongly objected and obstructed his cultivation practice in Falun Gong. Traumatized by the external and domestic persecution, Mr. Xie became mentally unstable. He was later hit by a speeding car and died on August 23, 2001.

Note:

(1) Force-feeding is the number one cause of death for Falun Gong practitioners. The purpose of police force-feeding is never to nourish, but rather to torture practitioners and to cause so much pain that they will renounce their practice of Falun Gong. To that end, the police have used many different means to cause excruciating pain and injury, including inserting and withdrawing the feeding tubes repeatedly, leaving the feeding tubes in the stomach, knocking out teeth to force-feed, force-feeding saturated salt-water, vinegar/liquor, hot pepper oil/mustard oil/boiling water, urine/faeces, etc.
