74-year-old Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Xu Zongying passed away on March 20, 2004 after enduring frequent harassment and threats from local authorities. Her daughters Chang Xueling and Chang Xuexia, also Falun Gong practitioners, are currently being tortured at the Dalian City Forced Labour Camp.

Prior to practising Falun Gong, Xu Zongying had suffered multiple bone fractures in her back, and as a result she had to walk with her back bent at nearly 90 degrees, almost parallel to the ground. She began practising Falun Gong in 1996, and soon she was able to straighten her back.

In September and October 2001, Xu Zongying's two daughters, Chang Xueling and Chang Xuexia, were arrested by police. They were sentenced to two years of forced labour. Their employer, the Dalian Port Corporation fired them during their detention at the labour camp. Xu Zongying was shocked by the news that her daughters were fired and being held in a labour camp. Her older daughter Chang Xueling has a daughter who is attending elementary school. Xu Zongying had to move into Chang Xueling's home to take care of her granddaughter.

Xu Zongying had no source of income and neither did her daughter; they were forced to live on money given to them by relatives and other practitioners. The perpetrators from the Xianglujiao Street Party Committee in the Xigang District often went to Chang Xueling's home and threatened Xu Zongying, "You can't practise Falun Gong here; if you do, we'll throw you out!"

Xu Zongying's daughter-in-law was also fired by the Dalian Port Corporation for practising Falun Gong, which added to her stress. In order to stay in the home to take care of her granddaughter, she practised in secret. She passed away on March 20, 2004.
