Hubei Province
Falun Gong practitioner, Li Binghua, male, 36 years old, has been beaten severely several times. He is an honest peasant, who worked in Guangdong Province. He has been very persistent in clarifying the truth since he obtained the Fa. When Dafa was defamed, he was illegally sentenced to two years of forced labour education for going to Beijing. Later, his prison term was further extended for six months.
When Li was in the seventh sub-unit of the Shayang labour camp, every practitioner there was under 24-hour surveillance by a group of four inmates who were given the assignment of watching practitioners. (Before the strict surveillance team was formed, practitioners at each sub-unit had already been subjected to strict surveillance; it simply had not yet been centralized.) In order to try to make Li give in, the head of the seventh unit, Zhang Yinping arranged for four young and strong inmates to supervise and control him in particular. He even encouraged them by saying, "In order to achieve the goal of transforming him to give up Falun Gong, you can use whatever means that you can think of."
Thus, they used every extreme means to desperately beat and mistreat Li Binghua. For example, they kept Li in a state of extended mental intensity, not allowing him to rest 24-hours a day. Even when he was walking, they forcefully made him walk as if "riding an airplane" (Translator's note: In this torture, the head is bent down until it cannot go down any further, while the hands are pulled up and held up to the highest point. The hips have to point up. The body in this position looks like the shape of an airplane, which is what this torture is named after.) They ceaselessly insulted him, took turns to say dirty stories and disgusting things in his ear. They intentionally pulled him out of the restroom when he was in the middle of urinating, and would not let him use tissue when he went to toilet. They would stop him or put dirty things into his bowl when he was only half finished his meal. When Li was doing manual labor, they even intentionally increased the intensity of his work. What was even more severe, the four often took turns beating Li, smashing his head or body on the wall, or on the iron pole of the bed.
Because Li Binghua endured this kind of torture for such a long period, especially with the trauma to his head, he began to appear as if he were in a trance. The evil started spreading rumours that Li had "cultivation insanity." Therefore, all practitioners detained in the seventh sub-unit stood up to sternly point out that it was caused by the vicious torture. They also appealed to end his brutal torture. But they received an even wilder revenge from the evil. The police locked practitioners, Qiao Zuoquan, Zhang Jingzhou, and Zhou Guoqiang into a small cell respectively. They tortured the practitioners by beating them, tying up their hands behind their backs and hanging them onto the house beam leaving their feet off the ground, or leaving only their toes touching the ground for the whole night.
The vicious people, enraged that Li Binghua "offended the guard by trying to escape," locked him in a confinement cell, and tortured him even more brutally. Others would have no way of knowing the torture and persecution Li encountered in the confinement cell. But 20 days later, (around the tenth day of June 2001), when people saw him he was being escorted and supported by the "strict surveillance team." He was already disabled. His whole body was black and blue, with not a single piece of flesh unmarred. Electric shock marks and scratches were everywhere. His lower legs were as thick as his thighs. His two knees were so festered that the bones were exposed, and his joints could not bend. Marks of handcuffing were also left on his wrists such that flesh and bones could be seen. His two hands and arms were so swollen that one could not bear to look at them. He had been tortured to the point that he no longer looked human. With one glance at him, anyone could tell that this had resulted from severe torture.
After Li came back to the "strict surveillance team," the police still forced him to attend the physical training. He fainted several times, and was at his last gasp a few days later. Only then did the police send him to the hospital for emergency rescue. After about ten days of "recovering," Li Binghua came back. One can only imagine what only ten days would do for a man so badly beaten and disabled! The only effect was that his joints were able to move slightly and he was able to climb and move very slowly when supported. The ruffians even inhumanly forced him to drag his disabled legs to attend the "military training." Li, not able to run, was forced to move forward by the evil police, the supervising guard, and the inmates who were assigned to watch practitioners. Altogether they pulled him up, pushed him forward, threw him forward, propped him up and dragged him forward. When he fell down, they pulled him up and continued dragging him forward. When he passed out, they awoke him and kept going on. When one group got tired of torturing him, another group would continue. This way, they took turns to torture him and would not let him go even in the night. They dragged him to the playground or the torture chamber to "supervise and control" him. They tortured him to the brink of death and as a consequence his life was in immediate danger. At this time, Li Binghua totally lost his ability to maintain himself. He was severely injured internally, and not able to move. It was very difficult for him to go to the restroom; he was not able to bend down and thus always dirtied his clothes. It was even more terrible in other aspects.
The evil pushed the practitioner to a state where living was even worse than death. But they still had not achieved their goal. In the face of the evil forced brainwashing, Li Binghua was not moved at all. He was again beaten at the end of July 2001 (He had been beaten severely earlier and had not yet recovered).
One noontime, instructor Huang brought some brainwashing materials and left. Yao Ping (22 years old, from Tiananmen, who was sentenced to three years in prison for robbery; and this was his second time in prison), the monitor of the inmates who were assigned to watch practitioners, forced Li Binghua to lead the reading of the materials. Li refused to do so. Yao and another inmate (who was also assigned to watch practitioners), Wang Yong (35 years old, from Yichang, who was sentenced to three years in prison for taking drugs; and that was his fourth time to be in the prison) beat Li severely. But Li still refused to read the materials.
Thus Yao and Wang called policeman Xiong Wen, instructor Huang, and the vice head of the sub-unit to come. They dragged Li Binghua to the torture chamber. One after another, screams came out of the chamber and then no sound was heard. After about one hour, Li was carried into the cell. Old injury with new injury, this time, it was even more severe than the last time. He was half in a coma. At this time, the surveillance guard, Yi Xiaohu (from Jingmen) and other four people had beat Li Binghua especially on his wounds and had laughed like wild animals. At that time, it was hot and humid; sweat and blood mingled and made him wet all over. Once again he was beaten so severely he had to be sent to the hospital for urgent rescue.
In the following months, Li Binghua towed his disabled and swollen limbs. He upheld his beliefs arduously but indomitably, and would rather have died than submit. He had been sent to the hospital several times for emergency rescue. The evil brutally tortured not only Li Binghua, but also every practitioner. They always made new wounds after the old ones had recovered a little bit. This way, they repeatedly persecuted Dafa practitioners. But what really surprised the police was that Li Binghua's wounds recovered so quickly and that he's still alive after such extreme torture. If he were an ordinary person, he would have died long before. Why do practitioners have such determination? All these things are miracles to them.
One day at the end of August, one cadre of the departmental level from the national justice department came to visit the labour camp. When he saw that Li Binghua had lots of difficulty to move and had wounds all over his body, he asked Li what had happened to him. Li Binghua pointed at Officer Xiong and other police, and told him sternly with a sense of justice that it was because of their torture. He requested appeal and impeachment. But without a single word, the cadre left with attendants crowding around.
