Ms. Chen Zurong was a Falun Gong practitioner from Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province. She lived in the family quarter of the Jiujiang Nuclear Industry Bureau. In the summer of 2002, she distributed truth-clarification materials in front of the farmers' market in Jiujiang and was reported by someone. The police arrested her and slapped her viciously in the police car. They then sent her to Jiujiang Detention Centre, where she was brutally beaten.
Chen Zurong went on hunger strike to protest the detention. After seven days, she was extremely weak. Not wanting to take responsibility, the detention centre sent her to the city hospital. Then they intimidated her husband to use his salary and apartment as collateral for her release.
After Chen returned home, the police and her work unit kept coming to harass her. They also threatened her whole family, saying that they would take away her salary and apartment. Her husband was very scared, so he locked her up in the apartment, not allowing her to step out of the room.
Chen's health got worse and worse. She passed away on February 5, 2004. One week after her death, the police ransacked her home again.
