Mr. Zhang Baowang was a Falun Dafa practitioner from Baoji City, Shaanxi Province. He was arrested by police and was sentenced to thirteen years in prison, because he exercised his Constitution rights of belief and freedom of speech. He was tortured inside the Provincial Prison until he could not walk and died on December 5, 2004.

Mr. Zhang Baowang was sixty years old, and a retired employee of the May First Paper Mill in Baoji City, Shaanxi Province.

In the summer of 2000, Mr. Zhang Baowang was picked up while on his way to Beijing to appeal by the local "610 Office" (1) personnel and police who detained him in the Chencang District Detention Center in Baoji City. He was sentenced to three years in the Provincial Zaozihe Labor Camp by the Chencang District "610 Office." He was released on a medical parole two years later.

In June 2003, he bought a copy machine to produce truth-clarifying materials. The Chencang District police arrested him at the truth-clarification materials center, sent him to a brainwashing class for more than forty days, and then transferred him to the Chencang District Detention Center again. Shortly thereafter, he was sentenced to thirteen years in prison. He was sent to the Provincial Fupingzhuangli Prison in July 2004. When his family went to visit him, they found that he was just skin and bones, and physically deformed. He could not walk, and had to be carried by other prisoners to see his family.

Only five months later, Mr. Zhang Baowang was tortured to death on December 5, 2004. Mr. Zhang's family is constantly threatened by the Prison, the local 610 Office and police. They do not dare to appeal his wrongful death at this time.

(1) "The 610 office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems.
