64-year-old Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Zhang Honghuai from Jiutai City, Jilin Province started practising Falun Gong in 1997, which cured his illnesses. In December 2000, he went to Beijing to appeal on behalf of Falun Gong, but was illegally sentenced to one year of forced labour and incarcerated in Jilin Province's Jiutai Forced Labour Camp. During the period of his incarceration, Mr. Zhang suffered from liver illness as a result of the abuse he endured. Later he was released for medical treatment. After he returned home, he again took up studying the Falun Gong teachings and practising the Falun Gong exercises, and his liver ailment was cured.
As Zhang Honghuai refused to give up his practice, he was illegally detained for 15 days in 2002 and later sentenced to forced labour for two years. He was tortured, which resulted in the relapse of his liver disease. He was released on medical parole on September 25, 2002, but the local authorities still often went to his home to harass him. Suffering from both serious mental and physical trauma, he died on November 28, 2004.
