Ms. Tao Fangzhi, 46, lived in Huarong County, Hunan Province. She was detained at the Huarong County Detention Centre, serving a life sentence for manslaughter. During her detention, she started to practise Falun Dafa after a practitioner named Li Lianchun told her about Dafa. After she became a practitioner, Ms. Tao recognized from her heart the previous mistakes that she had made, and truly realized the purpose of life.
In the first half of 2000, Tao Fangzhi was transferred to the Hunan Provincial Women's Prison. She was tortured in the prison because she continued practising Dafa and telling the facts about Dafa to other inmates. In the beginning, the prison authorities tried to forcefully "convert" her by putting her into the "Transformation Group," where most practitioners were placed. Later, they transferred her to the Changfeng 2nd Brigade because there were just too many Dafa practitioners being jailed. While in the Changfeng 2nd Brigade, Fangzhi was harassed and tortured by the prison guard Dai Jiangli, who was responsible for the manufacturing operations in prison. Dai prohibited Fangzhi's family from visiting her and barred her from buying daily necessities. Dai did not allow other inmates to get close to her and illegally stripped her of her rights. Dai ridiculed Ms. Tao as "phony Falun Gong" and threatened to have "a few murder convicts to take care of you!"
Dai Jiangli also took extra initiative in torturing Dafa practitioners detained in other brigades. In April 2004 Dai saw Dafa practitioner Xiao Guiying speak to another practitioner, Jia Cuiying, who was detained in the "Elderly and Disabled" brigade. She immediately took Xiao Guiying to the brigade leader's office and searched her. After she found some Dafa articles, she ordered a 5-day solitary confinement for Ms. Xiao.
Xiao Guiying was a Dafa practitioner from Huaihua City, Hunan Province. She was first abducted in December 1999 and sentenced to three years at the Hunan Provincial Women's Prison. After she served out her sentence in December 2002, Ms. Xiao was abducted again in February 2003 because of her active involvement in exposing the persecution and producing Dafa information pamphlets. This time, she was sentenced to 8 years in prison and sent to the Hunan Provincial Prison at the end of 2003. In the Changfeng 5th Brigade, the prison guard ordered three inmates to constantly monitor Ms. Xiao.
The Changfeng 2nd Brigade also severely violated the prison regulations and legal statutes, forcefully ordering all Dafa practitioners to work overtime every day, for as long as 16-17 hours.
