In 1996, Falun Dafa was spreading in NanDu County located in northern Sichuan Province, at this time the amount of practitioners numbered over a thousand. After the persecution began, nearly thirty practitioners made it to Beijing to reveal the truth of the persecution. Seventeen practitioners have been sent to labour camps illegally and without trial.
In July 2000 alone, this county caught dozens of practitioners at one time, illegally sentenced 10 practitioners to labour camps, and extorted about 100,000 yuan [Note: an average urban worker's monthly salary is 500 yuan]. For those practitioners who went to Beijing to appeal, a 10,000 Yuan "sending fee" is demanded from either the company where they work, the street committee responsible where they live, or the County (Village) government.
