Mr. Wang Jianfu and Ms. Zhang Zhiyun, a married couple who both practise Falun Gong, were frequently harassed by the local police. Wang Jianfu has been sentenced to seven years in prison and is incarcerated in the Tianjin Prison. His wife Zhang Zhiyun suffered a mental collapse because of the persecution. No one knows who is looking after their teenage daughter. The following is the family's story.
Ms. Zhang Zhiyun, over 30 years old, lives in Pinggu District in Beijing. She started practising Falun Gong in 1997 with her husband Wang Jianfu. When the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began to persecute Falun Gong on July 20th, 1999, personnel from the local police station and other police departments frequently harassed the couple and persecuted them. Wang Jianfu was arrested in the summer of 2001 and suffered much torture at the hands of the police. He was later sentenced to seven years in prison and is still incarcerated in the Tianjin Prison. Zhang Zhiyun was sentenced to forced labour for one and a half years at the end of 2001. After she was released in 2003, she made a living with her teenage daughter by making pancakes. Their life was harsh. Sometimes Ms. Zhang was even unable to pay her daughter's school tuition. Despite this, she was still harassed by the village committee and police officers from the Donggaocun Town Police Station.
Early this year, Falun Gong leaflets exposing the persecution appeared in their local area. The police suspected that Zhang Zhiyun had something to do with this. Without any evidence and despite her daughter having no one else to look after her, the police incarcerated her mother in the police station for as long as a week. Zhang Zhiyun protested with a hunger strike and the police then had to release her; however, they still kept harassing her. The severe hardships in her life and the long-term harassment from the police traumatized Ms. Zhang, which eventually led to her mental collapse.
We hereby call on all just people to pay attention to this case and offer Zhang Zhiyun moral support. This is only one example of families in the Pinggu District being persecuted for their belief in Falun Gong. Other families devastated by the persecution are listed below.
The practitioner couple Mr. Wang Zicheng and Ms. Zhang Aiping: they have both been sentenced to two years in prison, and their two children were left home alone.
The Mr. Ma Zhanquan and Ms. Tian Shurong couple; they were arrested on February 21st, 2005 and are now incarcerated in the Pinggu District Detention Centre. Their son Ma Jian, 11 years old, is a student studying in the second class of Pinggu District No. 4 Elementary School. His 69-year-old-grandmother and 71-year-old grandfather are looking after him. The elderly couple does not have any financial income.
