Liu Chunshu, female, 44, was arrested at Xiaoquan Hotel by police from Banan District in the early morning of January 3, 2002. The police forced her to take off her coat immediately after she arrived in the police station, even though the room's temperature was 6 o C [38o F]. She was also not allowed to eat for the entire day. On January 4, she was released after her family members presented to the police a medical certificate that allowed her to stay outside the labour camp for medical treatment.
However, the police threatened that they would hold her family members responsible if she left home. She had no choice but to write a statement officially divorcing herself from her family, hoping to free her family members from being implicated by the police. She went through so much physical and mental suffering at the police station that when she returned home, she had a high fever, acute abdominal pain, and could not eat. On the night of January 8, she was sent to a hospital for emergency rescue. Even then, the police placed her under surveillance and did not allow anyone to visit her. Liu Chunshu passed away on January 9, 2002.
