Days before the Fifth Asia-Pacific Cities Summit was to be held in Chongqing, China, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) "cracked down" on people who might have protested during the event.
The CCP regularly monitors and arrests Chinese citizens during important events or sensitive dates. In preparation for the summit, Chongqing Special Steel Company workers who have been laid off without compensation and Falun Gong practitioners, particularly practitioners who have been detained, persecuted and forced into brainwashing sessions, were followed and supervised 24 hours a day. The CCP feared that they would protest during the summit, so they called in national security officers from other cities, and forced people on social welfare, drug addicts, personnel from the residents' office, the community centre and state-operated units to carry out their so-called "crackdown."
According to inside sources, since the CCP has been in power, never has there been such tension and rigorous surveillance. Residents who live near the summit venue in Chongqing are given 1,000 yuan1each to go on outings in order to vacate the area.
Corrupt officials in Chongqing publicly persecuted Falun Gong practitioners in every district and county. They had them arrested, closely monitored by businesses and local communities, or arranged to have them go "do errands" or to another city for "holiday" by their workplace.
On the afternoon of October 6th, 2005, practitioners Ms. Li, Xiao Wen and four to five other practitioners were followed in Shapingba District, Chongqing City, and arrested by the 610 Office2. Their whereabouts are currently unknown. Further investigation is underway.
Dafa practitioner Ms. Huang (alias) and Ms. Yang Yuhua from Yubei District were arrested and taken to the Yiwanshui Detention Centre in Yubei District. The perpetrators did not allow their family members to take clothes or other necessities to them. Mr. Xiao Xiang was also abducted and his whereabouts are unknown. In addition, on September 28th, Zhao Shan, two female practitioners and one male practitioner from another place were arrested in Miaoershi, Jiangbei; further details are unknown.
The perpetrators in Changshou District held a meeting, and installed electronic devices in several areas including Duzhou.
In less than six months, more than ten practitioners from Changshou District have been arrested. At around 3 a.m. on September 6th, Mr. Gao Xiaobo was arrested because he tore up banners that slandered Falun Dafa. The perpetrators had been waiting there for many days to trap practitioners. They searched Mr. Gao's home and confiscated a newly purchased computer and other items. The perpetrators then went to his parents-in-law's home and detained them for one day. They threatened Mr. Gao's in-laws so that they became afraid of contacting people. They took Gao Xiaobo to the Town Agricultural Market Fair and paraded him through the streets in order to humiliate him. However, he continuously shouted out, "Falun Dafa is great," and "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is great." Mr. Gao was held for more than 20 days and his current situation is unknown.
Around 8 a.m. on September 23rd, while Ms. Zhang Xiuyun was going to the market, she was suddenly seized by five to six policemen from the Gelan Town Local Police Station and Manager Yuan Xiaoping. Forty-two-year-old Ms. Zhang is a Dafa practitioner from Nanxing Village, Gelan Town. Three policemen and two government officials took her directly to the Chongqing Women's Forced Labour Camp-Renhe Station. In June 2000, Ms. Zhang tried to appeal on behalf of Falun Gong and was detained for a month. At the end of 2001, she was again held in a detention centre for several months for telling the facts of Falun Dafa to people who had been misled by the government propaganda. On June 30th, 2005, her home was searched, and she was arrested and detained for the third time, this time for 28 days.
