Around 2001, when the persecution of Falun Gong by the head of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Jiang Zemin and his regime had lost public support and could hardly continue, Jiang Zemin, Zeng Qinghong and Luo Gan directed the staged "Self-Immolation" incident on Tiananmen Square1 to deceive the public and to instigate hatred against Falun Gong. A slow motion analysis of the CCTV videotape, however, clearly revealed that a policeman at the scene hit Liu Chunling, one of the immolators, on the head with a blunt object. No matter how many so-called "special reports" were fabricated by Jiang and the CCP to patch up the lie, they never dared to defend the concrete fact that Liu Chunling died from the blow to her head.
After Jiang Zemin fell out of power, Zeng Qinghong and Luo Gan continued to persecute Falun Gong in an attempt to make the new leadership of the CCP a scapegoat. In 2005, they initiated another round of large-scale arrests of Falun Gong practitioners. Cases of Falun Gong practitioners being persecuted to death occurred repeatedly, including some extremely severe cases.
Ms. Gao Rongrong was a Falun Gong practitioner in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. Her face was severely disfigured by many hours of electric baton torture2. She was later tortured until she died. Another Falun Gong practitioner, Ms. Wang Yunjie's breasts were disfigured and infected after being subjected to severe electric shock torture by Masanjia Force Labour Camp guards3.
As the persecution of Falun Gong escalated, the CCP's mouthpiece media reported a self-immolation case on Chang'an Street in Beijing on November 3rd, 2005. The report claimed that the case was still fuzzy, but it declared that the self-immolator was a "Falun Gong practitioner."
The report said the self-immolator was Ms. Li Xiaoying, a Falun Gong practitioner in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province. We have not yet received more detailed information about this case. The most recent information we have found about a Falun Gong practitioner named Li Xiaoying from Clearwisdom.net website was a report in "Latest News from China -- July 27th, 2004." It said, "Dafa practitioner Ms. Li Xiaoying from Shijiazhuang City hasn't been released after her detention term expired. She has been fined over 10,000 yuan. She has recently been sent to Hebei Province's Legal System Education Centre (actually a brainwashing centre) for additional persecution."4
Falun Gong teaches practitioners never to kill or commit suicide. If the so-called "self-immolator" was the same Li Xiaoying who was forcibly sent to the brainwashing centre, people cannot help but ask this question: did the brainwashing cause Ms. Li to burn herself or did the police burn her after persecuting her?
This reminded people of another staged "self-immolation" case.
On April 18th, 2001, a similar tragedy occurred in Baiguo Town, Macheng City, Hubei Province. Ms. Wang Huajun, 36 years old, was a Falun Gong practitioner in Fengjiashan Village, Macheng City, Hubei Province. She was arrested when she was clarifying the truth in Macheng City. The police brutally beat her until 11 p.m. Ms. Wang was dying. The police then dragged her to the front gate of the municipal government building, poured gasoline on her and burned her to death. The police told the public that she set fire to herself. Wang Huajun had only one ear left. The back of her head, her back, and her lower body were not burned. On her throat, there were two deep cuts from a knife. People from her village who sent her body to be cremated saw her body, and said that she definitely did not die of self-immolation. The clumsy lie fabricated by the local government was full of loopholes. A female sanitation worker witnessed what had happened. The local authorities forbid people from investigating this case, and strictly blocked the spread of any information regarding it.
Could what happened to Wang Huajun also have happened to Li Xiaoying today? The CCP said it would continue to investigate the case. If the CCP itself is the culprit, how could we expect a fair investigation? We can only hope for a fair investigation of the case after the persecution ends.
