Because Ms. Zhu Yan practises Falun Gong, her residence has been illegally searched several times and she has been detained several times. That kind of pressure led to a separation between her and her husband.

Police Chief Chen Xingzhu from the Longtan District's Gangyao Town Police Precinct in Jilin City, Jilin Province, arrested Ms. Zhu in October 2005. The police did not show any official documents when they arrested her. They did not inform her family, either. Zhu Yan was detained in the #3 Detention Centre. Her 18-year-old daughter and 20-year-old son were left at home without any income. They went everywhere to look for her. Approximately a month and a half later they found out at the local police station that their mother had been sentenced to one-and-a-half years of forced labour and was incarcerated in the Heizuizi Forced Labour Camp in Changchun City, where she is currently.

Despite the attempted violent, forceful efforts to "reform1" Zhu Yan in the labour camp, she still will not give up her belief in Falun Dafa. She has suffered from various kinds of physical punishment and sustained physical and mental trauma.

A few days ago, many people in Ms. Zhu's hometown heard rumours about her having been tortured to death. Hearing this, her children were terrified and devastated. Now that everyone in the world knows that agents from the Chinese Communist regime harvest organs from living Falun Gong practitioners for financial gain, the children desperately wanted to see their mother. Overcoming many difficulties, they finally got to see her at the labour camp. However, Ms. Zhu was very weak. Because the police and the inmates who were assigned to "sandwich" her keep a close eye on her, her son and daughter could only talk to her on the phone with a thick glass wall in between. They had only spoken a few sentences when a prison guard took Ms. Zhu away. Alarmed at their mother’s poor physical condition, they went to beg the labour camp officials to release her. The officials told them to go petition those who arrested her. If they agreed, they would release her.

Around noon on June 12th, 2006, the two young people went to the local Gangyao police precinct. They held up a one-by-two-metre banner to appeal for their mother. In the middle of the banner were large characters reading "Injustice" and "Kindhearted People, Please Help." On both sides it also read: "Illegal Imprisonment, No Doors Open for Appeal, Having a Belief System Is Not a Crime, Good and Bad Will Earn Appropriate Returns." "Return Our Mother, Return Our Family, Return Our Freedom."

They had been there for just a few minutes when a police car stopped in front of the daughter. A man stepped out of the car. He was Police Chief Chen Xinzhu from the Gangyao precinct. Two other officers emerged from the station. One was Li Hongqi, the other was Piao Chenggang, the political head. They asked the brother and sister why they were there. Then they tried to drag them inside to "solve the problem." Police Chief Chen yelled, "Tear up that banner!" They advanced menacingly to take the banner away. The two young adults dared not enter the police station. Another, unnamed officer approached. At Chief Chen's command, the four police agents dragged and beat the two young adults.

Many onlookers had by then gathered. In front of these people, Chen and Piao violently beat and kicked the two youngsters. Chen beat the son to the ground; then he beat the daughter. Neither are practitioners. The two of them struggled and shouted, "Policemen are beating people!" Chen said, "It’s a Falun Gong issue. What can you do even if we beat you?" Upon saying this, they beat the two even more. The son's mouth was bleeding. His forehead was swollen and bleeding. His back and arms were injured. He fell to the ground.

The onlookers tried to stop the police. One kind-hearted person went up and said, "It is illegal for police to beat people, especially two innocent young adults." Chen said, "It’s illegal to beat people, but we will take them to the hospital if something goes wrong."

The scars and bruises on the son’s arm

In the meantime, the unnamed policeman pushed the daughter to the ground. Chen then grabbed her hair and pulled her up and down several times. Much of her hair was pulled out and her clothes were torn. Chen then fiercely kicked her lower back. The daughter held one police officer's hand and cried, "Uncle Police, don’t you have any conscience at all? You also have a wife, children and parents. Your children might be about my age. Can you treat them like this? If their mother was tortured like ours, wouldn’t they go to ask for her back?"

Many onlookers shed tears. Some said that the police were very brutal; others said, "Policemen have no conscience." As Chen’s car started to drive away, the daughter stopped it to reason with him. She asked Chen to give her brother medical treatment. Chen then shifted the responsibility to the other police officers. He also said, "I have treated you nicely today. I could have just put you two in jail as well." Saying this, he left.

The daughter crawled to her brother, who was by then unconscious. She held her brother and cried. Some kind-hearted people helped hold him up. Someone said, "It’s very pitiful to have been beaten like this." Another person said, "Go find a video camera and keep this as a record."

One person called the young peoples' uncle and aunt. The uncle went to the police station to look for the ones who beat his niece and nephew. None of the police would admit hitting them. Many kind-hearted people said, "Go sue them. We’ll be your witnesses. We saw everything. We’ll be available whenever you ask for us!" Some others said, "Why don’t you hit them? Scratch their faces. In that situation, no matter what you do to them, it would be all right. It is self-defence. They are law enforcement employees but have violated the law on purpose; hence they have doubled the degree of the crime."

Chief Chen walked away after severely beating innocent people. He certainly would not admit to the crime. The aunt sent the nephew to the hospital and spent over 200 yuan2 to treat his wounds.
