Falun Dafa practitioner Ms. Shen Chengxin from Fusong County, Jilin Province, was 66 years old. After she started to practise Falun Dafa, all of her diseases disappeared.
Following the events of July 20th, 1999, Lushuihe Political and Judiciary Committee Secretary Zhou Kaide and police department chief Diao Tingren harassed Ms. Shen many times. They forced her to write and sign the "five statements" to renounce Falun Dafa, got her fingerprints, and told her to give up cultivation, among other things. Prior to the two National Assemblies (of the Congress and the Political Consultative Conference) in 2000, officials from the Xishan local police department took Ms. Shen to the town's police department and detained her for one night because she had participated in group study of the teachings of Falun Dafa. She was released on the second day but only after her family had been forced to pay a "deposit." Afterwards she was "illegally imprisoned1" and persecuted at brainwashing sessions conducted by the Xishan Street "political safety" committee and was monitored by committee director Wang Wanmei.
Around the time of the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2003, officers from the Xishan local police department went to Ms. Shen's home to confiscate her property and search for Dafa books, audiotapes, and other materials. She was again imprisoned at the police station for one night. Her family members paid 1,000 yuan2 to the town police for her release.
In late September 2003, Ms. Shen Chengxin was intercepted by police on the street. The police searched her handbag and discovered Falun Gong-related materials. She was again taken to the town's police department. Deputy Chief Lu Hongyan personally interrogated and pummelled her. During the ransacking of her property, the police stole one pair of gold earrings, one gold ring and one gold necklace, which were birthday gifts she had received from her sons and daughters. They also stole all of her cash, which amounted to 200 yuan. Ms. Shen was imprisoned in Fusong County for a month and sentenced to forced labour. Her family members were forced to pay 2,000 yuan but were not given a receipt.
Because the Lushuihe Xishan police department and the town police department constantly persecuted and harassed her, all of Ms. Shen's family's savings were exhausted, and her body and mind were devastated. She was forced to scrape out a living by cultivating some unused land in the mountains. On June 15th, 2005, Ms. Shen Chengxin suddenly lost consciousness and died.
Note
1. Illegally arrested: Contrary to what former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, who initiated the persecution, and the Chinese Communist Party would like the world to believe, practising Falun Gong is NOT illegal in China. Although the Public Security Department issued an unconstitutional set of restraints on the practice at the onset of the persecution in 1999, no laws have been passed by the only legislative body in China, the People's Congress, banning Falun Gong or granting the police the authority to arrest Falun Gong practitioners for practising the exercises or distributing flyers. For a more complete discussion of the illegality of the persecution of Falun Gong, please refer to the article "The Ban on Falun Gong—A Dictator's Whim, Not the Rule of Law". (Variation: "illegally sentenced")
2. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.
