On Saturday 18th November 2006, Cambridge City Council invited Falun Gong practitioners to its Multicultural and Sports Festival as representatives of the local Chinese community. The purpose of the festival was to promote the wide cultural diversity of Cambridge.
Practitioners put on a powerful show and the hall was packed. One gentleman was so disappointed he had missed the fan dancing performance that he asked where he could see it in the future. Other people had asked where they could learn the Falun Gong exercises.
The show started and finished with a demonstration of the five sets of peaceful and beautiful Falun Gong exercises. One little boy in the audience was so moved, he attempted to join the fifth exercise.
Following the opening exercises, male practitioners did a vibrant flag dance. A tenor soloist then sang two songs with choral accompaniment. The first ‘Hu Huan’ or ‘Calling for Conscience’ urges people to quit the Chinese Communist party. The second song was called ‘Descendents of Dai Yu Hear My Words’, composed and arranged by UK practitioners, and was about the legend of Dai Yu and how he courageously averted a great flood catastrophe that was brought on because of people’s moral decay. The message of the song was to seize the day to learn right from wrong in order to have a prosperous future.
The beautiful lotus flower dance was then performed, followed by a violin soloist. A guitarist performed a minuet as well as some classical guitar arrangements. He was followed by delicate and enchanting fan dancing to the music of ‘Falun Dafa Hao’. Another guitarist and singer performed ‘Set Them Free’ and ‘Hush Now Child’, an original composition by a practitioner.
The last dance performance was using ‘Fortune Drums’. As the final demonstration of the beautiful Falun Gong exercises were completed, the Mayor of Cambridge Councillor Robert Dryden arrived with his wife. Cambridge MP David Howarth also arrived at the festival. Some special fan dancing and fortune-drum dancing were performed in their honour.
