I was told that the Lanzhou Song and Dance Troupe is going to perform in Europe. As the title of the show, “Grand Dream of Dunhuang Grotto” is very attractive, I was anxious to visit the Troupe’s website and did so with high expectations. On the website, I was shocked to find the highlighted caption: “Grand Dream of Dunhuang Grotto, an entirely different and anti-traditional dance drama.” “The flying fairies in the drama openly allege that they are against tradition.”
The first subtitle is “The destiny angel defies tradition.”
The following is the explanatory text: The “Grand Dream of Dunhuang Grotto” will present you with untraditional fairies which are endowed with more human personalities than in the Buddhist teachings.” “The flying fairies are no longer the gods high in heaven,” etc.
The last subtitle is: “Red fairies are laden with the intention to kill.”
Further explanatory text: “Though there are no red flying fairies in Buddhist murals, the red flying fairies appear in this dance drama twice, which symbolises extraordinary meanings.” “Red flying fairies dances foretell a bloody ending”.
As the historic story was thoroughly twisted, I was very disappointed after reading the introduction and I no longer wanted to see this anti-traditional “Grand Dream of Dunhuang Grotto.”
China is an ancient country with five thousand years of history, and Chinese culture has a rich and profound inner meaning. There were many sages and saints in ancient China. In the Tang Dynasty, the culture was so splendid and brilliant that many states paid tribute to the Emperors, which is a real honour of the Chinese nation. It is each and every Chinese people’s responsibility to respect history and promote traditional Chinese culture. But unfortunately, the Lanzhou Song and Dance Troupe’s Grand Dream of Dunhuang Grotto has overtly tampered with the history and openly defied the Chinese tradition, which has made many people feel very disappointed.
With China’s defiance of tradition in recent years, Chinese people’s moral standard has degenerated significantly. Deceit, corruption, obscenity, gambling and drug abuse are not uncommon, while counterfeiting and polluted commodities are ubiquitous. As a result of the chaos in society, traditional Chinese virtues, including Benevolence, Righteousness, Propriety, Wisdom and Trust, have disappeared altogether. While many people are making efforts to revive traditional Chinese culture, the Lanzhou Song and Dance Troupe should be held to account for the Grand Dream of Dunhuang Grotto’s going against history.
In a nutshell, “the Grand Dream of Dunhuang Grotto” is not welcome in Europe.
