Before July 20th, 1999, at least 600 faculty members and students at Huanan Institute of Technology (HIT) in Southern China practised Falun Gong. They improved their moral characters by cultivating their character following the principles of "Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance."
Since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began to persecute Falun Gong, some Party officials at HIT, especially the ones in charge of politics and law and those in the security department, have ruthlessly persecuted Falun Gong practitioners. They have committed terrible crimes by following Jiang Zemin's policies of "deceit, evilness, and conflict."
One of the Institute's vice presidents was a Falun Gong practitioner. He has been missing since July 20th, 1999.
Practitioner Deng Songjiu, a famous chemist; assistant professor Chen Ganjian in the department of physics; and many senior professors have been persecuted to death after suffering both physical and mental torture.
Education has been debased and is now just a tool for political persecution
Just as depicted in the book "The Person, Jiang Zemin", after Jiang started the persecution of Falun Gong, Chen Zhili began to use every level of the education system to persecute the innocent, and in so doing annihilating the consciences of those that cooperated. All levels of institutions of learning required students to criticise Falun Gong, and all faculty and students were forced to watch films that defamed and attacked Falun Gong. The purpose was to incite hatred of the practice and for everyone to express a negative attitude towards it.
On February 1st, 2001, the Department of Education sent a notice requiring all schools to initiate signature campaigns that targeted Falun Gong. The "million signatures" movement was first spread through the national education system; it was used to influence hundreds of millions of adolescent students. Some students would not sign any petition that was against Falun Gong, so the teachers tried to coerce the students into signing their names under threat of expulsion. Meanwhile, posters, banners, and propaganda attacking Falun Gong and its founder were posted everywhere on school campuses. Chen Zhili also had defamatory content added to high school and elementary school textbooks and various post-secondary school entrance exams. Even college admission tests and graduate student tests contained a question about the "self-immolation case," which has been shown to have been a staged event.
In 2004, under the instruction of Zhang Dejiang, Party secretary of Canton Province, the provincial education agency mandated that "anti-terrorist" information and content defaming Falun Gong be integrated into military training classes for freshmen in the province's 70 universities. As a result, students have been brainwashed and instilled with evil CCP principles and ideologies. In September 2005, during freshman military training on the HIT campus in Canton University, "security education" was conducted at night. CCP slogans and ideologies were taught to the students.
During the seven years of the persecution of Falun Gong, "unlawful people" at HIT have been cooperating with the 610 Office1 to post defamatory articles and pictures on campuses and in dormitories. Such articles have poisoned over 4000 faculty, staff, and their families and almost 45,000 young students.
In June 2006, a propaganda-filled photo exhibit was displayed on the ground floor of a university building. The slogan "Respect science, love life, maintain human rights, and evil cults" was used to incite hatred towards Dafa in youths and to poison the minds of more people. Guangdong University city is an enclosed college community which includes 10 universities in Guangdong Province with a population as high as 150,000. In this city, all of the education agencies require the colleges to initiate Dafa-defaming activities, thus poisoning generations of college students.
People are awakening quickly, and after recognising the true character of the Chinese Communist Party they are renouncing their CCP memberships. While over 17,000,000 people have quit the Party around the globe, the authorities at HIT go against the wave of resignations when they conduct swearing-in ceremonies for groups joining the Party and the Youth League. They praise the activities as rehearsal "vows" and drag students to join the Party. They threaten, coerce, and pressure any faculty or staff member who speaks the truth and try to persuade them to sign the Three Statements2. People are told that they will be reported to the public security if they refuse to sign, and on one occasion those people's names were read out at a meeting of all faculty and staff as a warning.
Deprived of the freedom of belief, human natures are ruined
There are people at HIT working to persecute faculty and students who refuse to attack Falun Gong and those who will not give up the cultivation of Falun Gong. Some faculty and staff have been fired and imprisoned, some students have been expelled from the Institute and not allowed to advance in academic studies or to graduate. Practitioners are sent to brainwashing centres to be brainwashed. These "centres" could be called concentration camps as they were set up by Jiang Zemin (former dictator of China) specifically to coerce Falun Gong practitioners. Falun Gong practitioners are deprived of their physical freedom and are subjected to brainwashing tactics, which sometimes include the use of violence. Those who refuse to be "transformed3" are sent to forced labour camps. So far, almost ten practitioners have been sent to Sanshui brainwashing centres to be tortured. At least six practitioners have been sentenced to forced labour terms. Li Xiaohui from the Institute of Architectural Design was fired from his position.
Around 10:30 on December 13th, 2000, staff from the 610 Offices in Canton City and the Tianhe District arrested Wang Jinhua, an HIT student, while he was working at the Dafa printing centre in Huangcunzhen Garden of Tianhe District. He was sentenced to six years in prison and suffered all kinds of torture while he was detained at Sihui Prison. Huanan Institute of Technology expelled him from the student roster.
Lu Ling, a teacher in the Department of Food at the Institute, was arrested when she appealed in Beijing. Wushan Public Security Substation and the Institute attempted to fine her 10,000 yuan4 but she refused to pay. One morning in 2000, she was arrested by police from Wushan Substation because she was practising the exercises in a corner of the campus. She was subsequently sentenced to three years in a forced labour camp.
The CCP is conducting a genocide of Falun Gong cultivators. Many times since July 20th, 1999, staff at the Institute have forced Falun Gong practitioners to write letters promising to give up cultivation. More practitioners have been threatened and coerced to hand in their [Dafa] books. In 2004 the new administration started persecuting retired practitioners and forcing them to write letters to renounce Falun Dafa's core principles of "Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance." Those who give up their faith and cooperate with the Institute are rewarded with fame and money. Some people have been promoted to department chairs, some have been allowed to resume their jobs, and others have had their pensions and housing reinstated. Professor Peng, former Party branch member of the Department of Chemistry, did not cooperate. Consequently, he was dismissed from the Party and his pension was decreased.
Lying, false claims, and deceptive propaganda
Since July 20th, 1999, to succeed at persecuting Falun Gong, the Jiang regime has used the whole national propaganda system to defame and frame Falun Gong. Facts are hidden, and many fake events are staged in order to create hatred in people who don't yet know the truth of Falun Gong. What is the truth about the HIT case reported by the media? The following are facts provided by insiders.
The suicide case of Ms. Yu Suzhao, a relative of one of the Institute staff, was one of the cases included in the "1400 cases."
A practitioner who lived close to Yu Suzhao and who practised at the same group practice site told us about her situation. Ms. Yu had been treated at the Fangcun Mental Hospital for mental illness for several months during the Cultural Revolution. In 1995 she started learning Falun Gong but concealed her history of mental illness history. (Falun Gong stipulates that people who have a history of mental illness cannot practise.) In early 1998, Yu had a recurrence of mental illness and her family sent her to a psychiatric hospital. At that time, Falun Gong practitioners persuaded her to stop exercising. She agreed and returned all her Dafa books and exercise tapes. She no longer practised Falun Gong after that. Six months later she had a breakdown and died when she jumped off a building.
Blocking the Internet and depriving people of their right to know
As mandated by Canton Province, the education department of Canton City "cleansed" Internet service sites and eliminated for-profit Internet cafes on campus. Campus websites were required to be connected to the Canton City educational and scientific research network and to use it as the only portal to the China education and science network. Campus websites have to apply to the Provincial Communication Bureau for a connection permit and have to be registered with a public information network security sub-station that monitors municipal public security. Restrictions and control of interactive programs such as campus web bulletin boards and chat rooms have been strengthened. A designated person monitors 24 hours a day, approves postings to major forums and locates and deletes "sensitive information."
Also, PCs with proxy servers are traced and recognised according to their traffic fluctuation and technical archives.
Falun Gong practitioners who log onto the Internet or download through campus websites have their sessions intercepted and stopped. For a period of time, Internet access was completely prohibited. This is unconstitutional and a violation of human rights. Jiang's regime blocks access to the Internet and thus deprives citizens of their right to know.
Strict surveillance and limiting personal freedoms
On the HIT campus, monitoring cameras have been installed everywhere in the living areas and public facilities. According to the security agency, the cameras are 30 meters apart. There is a camera close to almost every Falun Gong practitioner's home, which puts them under 24-hour surveillance. Telephone conversations are listened to and recorded. One practitioner met with another practitioner on the campus and was immediately identified and given a warning.
The security agency of the Institute even uses neighbours who live near practitioners to monitor practitioners and developed a group of "informational agents" who are involved with the persecution of practitioners. Some visitors to Falun Gong practitioner homes are monitored, so friends and relatives dare not visit each other normally.
In each class at the Institute, some students have been made "informational agents" to monitor fellow student's daily activities. Students who break through the Internet blockade and log onto overseas sites that are prohibited by the CCP and those who speak about the truth of Falun Gong publicly are reported as soon as they are identified.
Persecution by implicating family members
In its persecution of "Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance" the CCP tries to implicate practitioners' relatives in any way they can. Emotions are utilised, family members' positions and careers, academy enrolments, and residences are used to coerce Falun Gong practitioners to give up cultivation. The relatives' promotions and bonuses are tied to the "merit" of persecuting Falun Gong, inciting hatred, stirring up trouble, threatening, and inducing all civilians to agree with and even participate in the persecution. A persecution initiated by one dictator's personal will has morphed into the wide-spread brainwashing of a nation's people.
A large number of practitioners at the Institute were forced to give up their belief in "Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance" due to their family's strong opposition and monitoring. Some practitioners were forced to divorce; and some boyfriends or girlfriends of some young single practitioners, who were deeply in love, had to break up their relationships because they were afraid that they too would be implicated in trouble. Some youths severed all contact with friends whose parents are Falun Gong practitioners so that their political futures and those of their family wouldn't be affected.
In order to be trouble-free or for personal gain, the relatives of some practitioners, afraid of becoming the target of totalitarian persecution if implicated, used "not wanting to be involved in politics" as an excuse to accept the CCP's perverted attitudes, and to make statements against their true wills. Some even became persecution tools, whether consciously or unconsciously. In the past several years, betrayals, informing on, breaking-apart, and exposure by practitioners' relatives happened time and time again. Normal associations among Falun Gong practitioners, such as phone calls, are intercepted by their families and even reported on sometimes. Practitioner Li Jinju's husband believed the CCP's lies. He reported all practitioners who associated with Ms. Li to police sub-stations and the security agency. He limited her normal activities, followed her, and closely monitored her every move. Hooligans at the Institute often incited conflicts between Falun Gong practitioners and their families and stirred up trouble, which caused harm to practitioners both physically and mentally.
Chen Weixing's evil deed at the security agency of Huanan Institute of Technology
Chen Weixing is the head of the Politics and Law section of the security agency. Since July 20th, 1999, instructed by agency directors Xu Qike and Luo Wenbiao, he has participated in many bad deeds to persecute practitioners. For example, he arrested practitioners and then sent them to brainwashing centres at Sanshuior and Chatou and coerced retired staff to write "non-practice" statements, etc. He also posted fake pictures defaming and attacking Dafa on the campus of Huanan Institute and its affiliated schools, which poisoned the thoughts of youths and others, incited hatred, and did things that helped the CCP.
