It is the snowy season in Northern China again. My thoughts once again recall a past dark night and the remote wild mountains.
In December 2003, my wife was arrested and taken to Shenyang City's Longshan Forced Labour Camp for believing in Falun Gong. In freezing wind, with the crunching sound of snow, I went to visit her in the labour camp. The wind was blowing and the labour camp was in dead silence.
The first obstacle was the guards' room. Usually the guard cannot decide anything. The police directors of the first and second division who are specifically in charge of Falun Gong practitioners control the gate. Very often families are not allowed to visit them when they have been seriously tortured. The labour camp will refuse a family's visit in order to prevent any information about their torture from leaving the camp.
Because I came early this time, other families and the police director had not arrived. The senior police officer in the guardroom let me sit down while I waited. I started telling him the truth about Falun Gong and the cruel persecution. Stone-faced, he said, "I've seen enough. There ...". He raised his head with his chin pointing to the buildings where people were detained. His expression seemed to indicate that he had got used to what he saw and did not want to leak too much information.
I don't know when a cat appeared by my chair. Her long white hair was so dirty that it had turned grey. I saw her almost every time I came. The animal was raised in that room. While the guard dozed off, I said quietly to her, "Go find a farm family in the mountains. Leave this vicious place."
I was allowed to see my wife because it was near New Year's day. I sat across from her in the dining hall with over a dozen police surrounding us. She was very bony with a face swollen due to the torture. I asked about the tortures and my heart broke. Where is the wrong in believing in Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance? Where is the wrong in being a good person? During our conversation, we encouraged each other to cultivate firmly. I took every second to share the news from the outside.
At that time I saw practitioner Gao Rongrong from a distance. She was later was tortured to death. She was also very bony. I heard that she was so kind, tolerant and selfless, even the wardens said that she had a "crystal heart."
After the meeting ended, I left the chilly detention building. It was quite a long walk to get to the entrance. The air seemed to be frozen. Fortunately the sun was out. There was thick snow along the path. Suddenly, the cat jumped close to my feet. Her hair was snow white. She ran and jumped ahead of me but always kept a distance of about one metre. I said to her, "Go find a farm to live on. Leave this place." The practitioner who went with me laughed, "How come you are talking to a cat today?" The cat did not want to leave and continued to lead our way ahead and started to meow. Then I said to the cat, "Remember that Falun Dafa is good. You will have a good future, too." The cat stopped a little and started running again. She rolled over gently. The fellow practitioner laughed, "Can she understand?" I said seriously, "She can understand. Maybe I did not say it completely." I then said loudly, "This persecution is vicious. Remember that Falun Dafa is good! Remember that Falun Dafa is good! If you remember, please leave." As soon as I finished, the cat jumped up to the base of a street lamp. She squatted there and meowed at us. The fellow practitioner was very surprised.
We did not stop and continued to walk. When we turned back, we saw the cat was still squatting there and she meowed at us again. We walked further and turned back. She meowed again. Whenever we turned back, she always meowed and watched us leave. When we finally reached the entrance and looked back again, she looked like a snowball and we could still hear her.
In mid-May 2004, I once again went to Longshan Forced Labour Camp after hearing the news that practitioner Wang Xiuyuan from Shenyang was tortured to death by the labour camp and the Shenyang Dabei Prison Hospital. Worried about my wife, I hurried to the labour camp. However, the entrance was blocked with a large notice saying, "The dining hall is being renovated. All visits are cancelled. You will be notified when visits resume."
Because we knew about the cruelty in Longshan Labour Camp, we were horrified when we saw those black words. "This must be a lie." I punched the rail outside of the iron gate. After a long time, the senior police officer came out. I asked, "What happened here?" He said with eyes half opened, "Renovation..." I interrupted him, "It's impossible. Are they willing to spend the money? There isn't enough for their own pockets. What about the death of Wang Xiuyuan?" He was a little surprised, "Where did you hear that?" "Everyone is talking about it on the street. Open the door, I need to see my wife. It is such a vicious place..." Before I finished my sentence, he hurriedly turned back.
Several days later, I heard the news that Gao Rongrong had been shocked by policemen Tan Yubao and Jiang Zhaohua with electric batons for seven or eight hours, causing her face to become disfigured.
In the following several months, Gao Rongrong was detained at Shenyang Medical College. Shenyang City and the Political and Law Committee in Liaoning Province, as well as the 610 Office-controlled Liaoning Procuratorate, backed up the Shenyang legal bureau, Longshan Labour Camp, and thugs like Tan Yubao. Gao Rongrong continued to suffer.
Gao Rongrong was later rescued. Liaoning Public Security Bureau and the legal system then got the order from Luo Gan (of the central government political and law committee) and Zhou Yongkang (head of the public security bureau) to search for all who were involved in the rescue effort. They searched everywhere, from airports and customs to street communities.
Gao Rongrong was once again arrested. Luo Gan issued the order: Take special care to deal with this case. The female police officers in Masanjia Forced Labour Camp Su Jing, Zhao Laixi and Shi Fengyou from Shenyang Zhangshi education camp murdered Gao Rongrong, even under international watch.
In the various anti-torture exhibitions held by overseas Falun Gong practitioners, every time I see the contrasting pictures of Gao Rongrong, one with a lovely smile and the other with a burned face from the electric shocks, I cannot help crying. She wanted to tell us something. The pictures take my thoughts back to Shenyang Longshan Forced Labour Camp. Tang Yubao, Jiang Zhaohua and Su Jing are worse than animals! Those perpetrators along with the Chinese Communist Party will receive due retribution for their misdeeds.
