Recently it was reported that Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Ba Shuqun was arrested covertly by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and his status was unknown. On October 29th, 2007, his wife Ms. Jiang Li was suddenly hospitalised at Qilu Hospital.
The week before, on October 25th, Ms. Jiang was asked by officers from Tianqiao Police Station in Jinan City to sign an arrest warrant, in order to see her husband who was injured and had been away from her for over a year. Under pressure, she signed the warrant.
The next day she hurried to the police station. But upon arriving, she was told that her husband was not at the police station, but had been transferred on September 18th to the Xinkang Prison, inside Shandong Province Police Hospital.
When she got to the hospital, personnel demanded a 9,000 yuan1 "medical fee" from Ms. Jiang, indicating that Mr. Ba was seriously ill. At the time, the doctors refused to disclose Mr. Ba's condition. His family members requested to see him, but were denied.
During this time, Ms. Jiang worried about her husband and could not eat or sleep well. She felt stressed both mentally and physically. She went to the hospital to have a checkup and found that her blood pressure was very high. The physicians suggested that she be hospitalised for treatment and that she ask her family to accompany her. However, her husband's condition was unknown and her child was in school, so they could not accompany her. It is reported that she was accompanied by the director at her workplace, her colleagues, and friends.
Ms. Jiang's hope is that a lawyer can act on her behalf to rescue her husband.
According to an informed source, the authorities never relaxed their monitoring and tracking of Ms. Jiang, who is not a practitioner. After the mistreatment of her husband by the CCP was exposed by overseas media, the authorities intensified her monitoring.
In addition, the arrest and interrogation of Mr. Ba by the Jinan City police was not in accordance with legal procedures and required notifications. Mr. Ba went missing on September 12th, but it wasn't until October 15th that it was learned that Mr. Ba was being detained by the police.
By the time Ms. Jiang was notified by her workplace that her husband was detained at the Tianqiao Police Station, Mr. Ba had already been detained for 43 days. Moreover, before he was transferred, his leg was broken as a result of being beaten. The torture Mr. Ba suffered is hard to imagine.
According to reports on the Clearwisdom website, the Shandong Province Police Hospital is a dark place with a history of persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. Many practitioners who have been persecuted there have become extremely ill. They are mistreated continuously and are forced to accept the so-called "treatment." For example, practitioner Liu Jian, who was tortured to death at the Liuchangshan Labour Camp, was detained in this hospital from April to June in 2001. He was subjected to barbaric force-feedings. Practitioner Ms. Meng Lijun was tortured to the verge of death in this hospital. Ms. Tong Ruilian, a 60-year-old practitioner working in the Energy Institution under the Jinan City Academy of Science, was detained here for five to six months in 2000. Her health was worsening due to the mistreatment, and as a result, she could not take care of herself. She was brought home by her family and passed away in 2001.
Mr. Ba Lihua, who was Mr. Ba Shuqun's father, used to work in the headquarters of Shandong Province Military Region. Both Mr. Ba Lihua and his wife cultivated Falun Gong along with their son. They benefited tremendously both mentally and physically. Ever since the persecution of Falun Gong was initiated on July 20th, 1999 by Jiang Zemin [former leader of China and instigator of the persecution], they were severely pressured, and passed away as a result.
Mr. Ba Shuqun began Falun Gong cultivation in 1994. He followed the standards of a cultivator strictly and was recognised as a very kind person. He went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong several times and clarified the truth to people. He was also detained several times. The authorities tried to sentence him to a forced labour camp, so he was forced to become homeless for some time to avoid further persecution. In March 2006, he was reported to the police by evildoers, so local authorities again tried to persecute him. As a result Mr. Ba was forced to leave home again. He was later arrested once again.
To rescue her husband, fighting huge pressure, Ms. Jiang has called for people's help to expose the persecution case to various departments in Shandong Province and Jinan City. She also requested the immediate release of Mr. Ba and investigations of other cases.
