Ms. Yang Huirong and Ms. Wang Lanhua from Sanhe City, Hebei Province, Arrested

On the evening of January 2nd, 2008, Ms. Yang Huirong, in her 60s, and Ms. Wang Lanhua, in her 40s, from Sanhe City, Hebei Province, were arrested by local authorities. On the morning of January 3rd, Ms. Yang's home was ransacked, and her MP3 player, her tape recorder, and Falun Gong books were confiscated. The two women were taken to Sanhe City Detention Centre.

Ms. Yang's husband passed away when she was around 35 years old. She and her two daughters were in dire straits. By the time her two daughters married, she had aged and suffered from various diseases. Her physical and mental health improved drastically after she practised Falun Gong. She told everyone she met about the benefits she derived from practising Falun Gong.

Ms. Wang is a new practitioner.

After the onset of the persecution of Falun Gong, Ms. Yang's home was often ransacked. She was arrested and held in detention frequently. She was tortured in a brainwashing centre and was forced to become homeless to avoid being persecuted further. She suffered great hardship. The persecution of Falun Gong brought great sorrow to her. Her daughter, Liu Ying, an employee in the Tongzhou District of Beijing, became mentally ill and jumped off a building after being brainwashed.

Ms. Yang's daughter, Ms. Liu Ying, a college graduate and engineer, was 35 years old. She was an employee at the Beijing Titan Plastic Machinery Co. Ltd. (a joint venture located in Beijing and Hong Kong). She was thin, small, and frail. Her immune system was extremely compromised and she came down with pulmonary tuberculosis. Her heart rate was faster than normal and she suffered from nosebleeds. After she started practising Falun Gong at the end of 1998, her health greatly improved. She gained weight, was in good health, and became broad minded. At the end of 2001, Ms. Liu transferred from Changzhou City in Jiangsu Province in the south of China to the Tongzhou District in Beijing. She had worked there for a little over three months when the persecution began. On March 4th, 2002, while she was at work, staff from the Tongzhou District 610 Office¹ and police officers from the local police station Jiao Xiuliang, Dai Mingxiang, Wang Xinghua, and Zhang Zhichen went to the Titan Company and arrested her without showing an arrest warrant. She was taken to a brainwashing centre and mentally tortured for 20 days, during which time her six-year-old child was left unattended. In the brainwashing centre, the 610 Office officials and "transformation²" staff used inhuman methods to try to "transform" her and make her renounce Falun Gong. She went on a more-than-10-day hunger strike to protest her mistreatment. She was forced to constantly listen to the Communist Party's propaganda defaming Falun Gong and suffered physical torture. She was close to a mental collapse.

The brainwashing centre was a privately held prison that operated without adhering to any established Chinese law. As long as the practitioner did not write the so-called repentance statement³" to give up practising Falun Gong and defame Falun Gong, he or she would not be released and would be tortured. Although Liu Ying was eventually "transformed," 610 Office personnel did not leave her alone. They coerced her into becoming their accomplice and harassed her with frequent phone calls and propaganda, forcing her to betray fellow practitioners. Ms. Liu's mental state became unstable due to the pressure and harassment. On June 24th, 2003, she jumped off a building and killed herself. Two hours before she jumped, she received a phone call from the 610 Office staff, threatening her. Some ill-intentioned government officials spread rumours in the neighbourhood about Ms. Yang Huirong. They claimed that the death of her daughter, Liu Ying, was a result of practising Falun Gong.

Yang Xizhong, deputy captain of Sanhe City's National Security Team, was active in the persecution of practitioners. He was the main person responsible for arresting practitioners, ransacking their homes, and torturing them in the brainwashing centre in Sanhe City during the last two years. Yang Xizhong was responsible for the arrests of Ms. Yang Huirong and Ms. Wang Lanhua and their detention in Sanhe City Detention Centre.

2. "Reform or Transform" Implementation of brainwashing and torture in order to force a practitioner to renounce Falun Gong. (Variations: "reform", "transform", "reformed", "reforming", "transformed", "transforming", and "transformation")

3. Repentance Statement: In this statement the practitioner is forced to admit remorse for practising Falun Gong, promise to give up Falun Gong, and never again associate with other practitioners or go to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong.
