Many leaflets exposing the persecution and posters about Falun Dafa were found on the streets in Chenxi County around the Chinese New Year of 2002. Police from the National Security Team and agents from the county 610 Office1 tried to find out who was responsible. They harassed many practitioners at their homes, and one day they received a tip that Falun Gong practitioners frequently gathered in a room in the west part of the city.
At around 3:00 p.m. on March 5th, 2002, Yu Qingchang of the National Security Team led several policemen, including Xie Kaiji and Liu Shuqin, to break into that room. Four Falun Gong practitioners were inside talking, including Mr. Jin Jiqiu (in his forties), Ms. Yu Shanmin (in her fifties), Ms. Xia Yunxiu (in her fifties), and Ms. Zhang Jiaoyu (in her fifties). The police arrested all of them and took the Falun Gong books that they found in the room. The police claimed that this was a meeting place for Falun Gong practitioners, and the practitioners were taken to the Chenyang Police Station at 4:00 p.m.
Officers at the Chenyang Police Station were notorious for beating people and they even beat people to death. County 610 Office agents and policemen from other stations also came to the Chenyang Station. They locked the four practitioners in separate rooms and assigned two police officers to watch each practitioner. The practitioners were interrogated one after the other. The police asked, "What were you doing in that room? Did you distribute leaflets on the street? Where did you get the materials? Are you still practising Falun Gong?" Mr. Jin Jiqiu was the first person to be interrogated and he refused to answer the questions. The police dragged him to a room on the third floor, which was the room usually used to beat people. One policeman said to Mr. Jin, "Do you know who we are? We are the most brutal police officers when it comes beating people. All the best tormentors from the police department and each station are here. We'll make you talk." Then there were the sounds of a table scraping on the floor and Mr. Jin's cry of pain shortly after. Mr. Jin was tortured from 4:00 p.m. until midnight. His trousers and underwear were torn and he was not able to move for several days after the torture.
At 9:00 a.m. on March 6th, the police interrogated Ms. Yu Shanmin, but she also did not answer the questions. The police dragged her to the third floor and handcuffed one hand to a window frame and the other to a table leg. Then they pulled the table in the opposite direction, almost splitting her apart. The police call this torture "five horses splitting a body." This torture is very brutal. When the handcuffs are pulled in opposite directions, the victim feels tremendous amounts of pain. After a while, the hands swell and the handcuffs dig into the flesh, and sometimes the hands are disabled. Ms. Yu Shanmin cried from pain frequently. When her arms were pulled in a straight line, her legs were laid straight on the floor and the policemen took turns stepping on them with their leather shoes. Agent Zhang from the county 610 Office used a cigarette to burn Ms. Yu's face and left two black scars on her face. Ms. Yu asked to use the toilet but the police did not allow her to do so. Bao Zejun from the suburb police station poured cold water over Ms. Yu's neck and her clothes were all wet. She became incontinent due to the torture and sat on a pot of cold water and urine. The police kept her there and tortured her from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
At 2:00 p.m., Ms. Xia Yunxiu was dragged to the third floor. Not only did the police torture her using the "five horses splitting a body" method, but they also used the "hanging upside down" torture. (Details about this torture can be found at http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2004/6/10/49058.html). The police locked her foot high up from a window frame and hung her upside down. Several officers pulled her other foot, as if to split her apart. This torture technique was even more painful than the "five horses splitting a body." Ms. Xia's ankle was in great pain, as was the back of her crotch area. The police did not stop the torture until Mrs. Xia confessed to the false charges. Policeman Lou's mother had worked with Ms. Xia at the same company, but Lou tortured Ms. Xia more brutally than anyone else. He also recorded the interrogation of the three tortured practitioners.
Ms. Zhang Jiaoyu was forced to kneel down for a day on March 6, 2002. That night, Ms. Yu Shanmin's hands and Ms. Xia Yunxiu's hands swelled black and purple. Her fingers were so stiff that they could not clasp anything, and Ms. Yu's entire legs were purple. Both of them could not take care of themselves and needed help even to wash their faces.
