Relatives Try to Rescue Beijing Falun Gong Practitioner Mr. Qi Wei

On February 22nd, 2008, Qi Wei, a resident of the Chaoyang District in Beijing, was forcibly taken away by Liu Xun and Liu Zhenqiang, police officers from Anzhen Police Station. It has been 14 days and there has been no word from him. His family has not received any legal documents from the police station.

Mr. Qi's family and friends have searched everywhere for him, but authorities at the police station, detention centre, and Chaoyang Public Security have told them they didn't know where he is. It is not known whether he is still alive or not. His family and friends are very anxious.

At about 9:20 p.m. on February 22nd, 2008, when Mr. Qi and his newly-wedded wife were out for a walk, four plainclothes officers approached suddenly and, without presenting any ID, started kicking and beating Mr. Qi. They forcibly took the couple to Anzhen Police Station. At 3 a.m. on February 23rd, Mr. Qi's wife was released after vigorous protest from her family. At 6:30 a.m., Mr. Qi's wife and his mother went to Anzhen Police Station to see him, but they were turned away by the police. At 8 a.m., they saw that Mr. Qi was handcuffed, forced into a police van, and taken away.

On February 22nd, between 9:40 p.m. and midnight, a Captain Zhang from the National Security Unit of the Chaoyang District and other police officers raided Mr. Qi's house. Not finding any relevant evidence after ransacking the home, they took Mr. Qi's notebook computer and an empty hard drive.

Since February 23rd, Mr. Qi's family has gone several times to the police station to ask his whereabouts. The police have arrogantly told them that they were only responsible for his arrest and cared about nothing else. They haven't told them where Mr. Qi is.

On February 25th, between 7 p.m. and midnight, Qi Yulin and Xu Yong, the captains of the Chaoyang District Public Security Bureau, and more than ten police officers broke into Mr. Qi's house again and searched for five hours. Without finding any evidence, they pretended to have found two discs with materials exposing the persecution in a pile of clothes in the room and threatened Mr. Qi's mother. In fact, Mr. Qi's family had never seen these two discs in their house before. Furthermore, the police had already come and thoroughly searched the house on the night of February 22nd. The Qi family suspected that the police had planted the discs on orders from their superiors. When the family asked Mr. Qi's whereabouts, the police said they didn't know and that their task was just to search their house.

On February 28th, the Qi family hired a lawyer who tried to find Mr. Qi in the detention centre. The lawyer was told that there was no such person.

At about midnight on February 29th, Mr. Qi called his brother-in-law from his mobile phone, which showed the caller ID 64419129. He just said one thing, "Is my mother there?" before he was forcibly cut off. Later, the family learned from the caller ID number that the call originated from the police station. This means that since midnight on February 29th, the eighth day since he was missing, Mr. Qi was still being detained in the police station.

After taking up the practice of Falun Dafa, Mr. Qi became an unselfish person who always put others' interests first. He won the respect and honour of his colleagues, friends, relatives, and supervisors. Since the persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese Communist Party began on July 20th, 1999, Mr. Qi was arrested and detained many times just for his belief in "Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance."

This time, he was arrested simply because he loaned his car to a fellow practitioner. The Anzhen Police Station and the Chaoyang Public Security Bureau, without showing any legal documents, took him away and ransacked his house on two occasions.

Mr. Qi's family and their lawyer have tried their best to find him in the past 10-plus days, but to no avail. They have strongly appealed to heads of related departments to punish the criminal acts of the public security personnel and have urged them to release Mr. Qi.
