Two years after Mr. Yang Xiaojie died as a direct result of the torture meted out to him in a Chinese prison, his family hired a lawyer to seek justice. When the lawyer went to the Hebei Province Fourth Prison to investigate, Yue Yuhai, the chief of the Prison Political Section, gave false and misleading statements. He lied. He refused to admit to that Mr. Yang was tortured, and covered up the fact that Mr. Yang was ill and that his family was not allowed to visit him for over one year. Yue Yuhai forced inmates Fan Jiangshan and others who had monitored Mr. Yang to lie to the lawyer, telling him that Mr. Yang had been very well treated in prison.
Mr. Yang's family filed a lawsuit against the prison guards of Hebei Province Fourth Prison, including Wang Guobin, Liu Ning and Chen Guoxin, charging them with murder. The case came to the Hebei Province Prison Management Bureau Appeal Office recently. Appeal Office Chief Jing dealt with the case and said that he would have an answer within 60 days. The legal systems in communist China is largely a sham, so it is not known how this case may turn out. More background on the case follows:
Prison officials released Mr. Yang on December 28th, 2005, after more than a year of repeated negotiations with the prison and the Hebei Province Prison Management Bureau,. He was very weak and on the verge of death. When the doctor saw him, the first sentence was, "Why is he in such poor condition?" It was too late. At 11:15 a.m. on January 26th, 2006, Mr. Yang passed away.
Mr. Yang used to work in the north office of China Youth newspaper. He began to practise Falun Gong in 1996 and saw great benefits in his mind and body. He was an honoured employee. On September 28th, 2001, Mr. Yang and his wife, Ms. Liu Runling were arrested because they refused to renounce their belief in Falun Gong. They were beaten and on September 9th, 2002, were both sentenced to 11 years in prison. Mr. Yang was over 5'7'' tall and used to weigh more than 165 pounds. When he was home on medical parole, he weighed only 83 pounds. He looked like skin and bones, their was no meat even on his buttocks.
The prison guards are responsible for Mr. Yang's death and will ultimately meet with justice. Mr. Yang was fired from his job, his home was ransacked many times and he was detained many times, all because he practised Falun Gong. He died as a direct result of the torture he endured in prison. Mr. Yang's wife, Ms. Liu Runling is still being detained in the Hebei Province Women's Prison.
