On February 25th, 2008, Mr. Wang Zenghu, a Falun Gong practitioner from Dingzhou City, Hebei Province, was reported to the police for distributing CDs exposing the persecution of Falun Gong. He he was arrested and taken to the Chengguan Town Police Station in Suning County, Cangzhou City. The second day, Cui Lidu (male), the deputy chief of the Domestic Security Department of Suning County, along with a police officer from the Dingzhou City Police Department, broke into Mr. Wang Zenghu's home and took away his computer. They also threatened his family, saying, "You will also be arrested if you don't cooperate."
Mr. Wang Zenghu's two older brothers travelled hundreds of miles to see him, but the Suning County Domestic Security agents refused them.
On the morning of March 12th, 2008, Mr. Wang's family went to request his immediate release, but police officers from the Suning County Domestic Security Department told them that Mr. Wang's case had been given to the court, and it would not be easy to request a guarantor (they were attempting to extort some money) for him. That afternoon, Mr. Wang's family went there again, but they didn't get to see him, so they turned to the staff for help. Deputy Chief Cui Lidu replied over the phone, "Do not ask me about this. I cannot make the decision." The staff told his family that Chief Zhang wasn't there and did not allow them to wait in the office. His family then went to the Suning Detention Centre, hoping to see Mr. Wang. They waited in the rain outside of the detention centre until almost 4 p.m. The gatekeeper told them, "You need to ask permission from the guard on-duty to get in." Mr. Wang's family then called the Domestic Security Department again, but the staff told them that they could not make the decision (about whether they could meet Mr. Wang).
Mr. Wang Zenghu's father just passed away. His nearly 80-year-old mother misses and worries about her son, and she almost lost her vision due to constant crying. His wife is working to support the family and very busy trying to rescue him, so she has no time to take care of their daughter, who in the tenth grade. Her daughter has to eat at a relative's home.
Mr. Wang Zenghu, around 36, is a retired soldier. He started to learn Falun Gong at the end of 1998 and beginning of 1999. He learned that Falun Gong is an exercise based on the principle of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance," and it teaches people to be better people and more compassionate, so he started to practise Falun Gong. At end of 1999, the Dingzhou City Police Department took away his computers, copiers, and printers, a total value of more than 50,000 yuan1, from his printing store, claiming they were justified in doing so because his business had copied Falun Gong leaflets exposing the persecution. They arrested him and imprisoned him in the Dingzhou City Detention Centre. Guards at the detention centre ordered other prisoners to severely beat him. After Mr. Wang went back home, he requested the police to return all of his property. Officers told him, "Forget about them. They have new owners."
Between March 2002 and April 2002, police officers from Dingzhou City Police Department ransacked an internet cafe that Mr. Wang Zenghu and his friends invested 160,000 yuan in. Their reason was that while it was being monitored, there were some people browsing the Clearwisdom [a Falun Gong] website. The police asked them which computer was used to browse Clearwisdom, and they couldn't answer, so the police took away twenty-six computers. In April 2003, the Dingzhou City Police Department demanded 10,000 yuan as a fine before they would return the computers. One computer's hardware was stolen, and there was a brick left in the machine instead. Since computers are upgrading very fast, the returned computers were like garbage by the time they were returned, leading to the closing of their business. It caused the direct economic loss of more than 100,000 yuan. Mr. Wang Zenghu therefore could not make a living; he lived on his relatives' support, then worked odd jobs to support his family.
