Ms. Xu Yanli lives in the Bajiao Neighbourhood of Shijingshan District, Beijing. She used to be an English teacher at the Geology University. She was fired a couple of years ago for her belief in "Truthfulness-Benevolence-Tolerance." Since then, even though she is disabled, she has been making a living by doing odd jobs. Around April 20th, 2008, police from the Domestic Security Division of Shijingshan Police Department arrested Ms. Xu on her way to work.
Ms. Xu Yanli has an eight-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son. Her parents-in-law, who are in their late 60s, have been forced to take care of the children since her arrest. Their lives are extremely difficult. Ms. Xu's father-in-law appealed to the Bajiao Police Station, then the Domestic Security Division. The station and the division pointed fingers at each other and took no action. Recently, the officer from the Domestic Security Division threatened Ms. Xu's in-laws. They said they would take the children away to an orphanage and deny them any visitation privileges.
Ms. Xu's mother lives in the US. She had a heart attack after receiving the news of her daughter's arrest. Ms. Xu's brother works for the UN.
The police frequently harassed and threatened Ms. Xu before her arrest. In 2002, officers from the Domestic Security Division of Shijingshan District Police Department arrested her and her husband, Mr. Wei Shijun. Ms. Xu was released after she fell into a coma. In the evening on July 5th, 2005, officers from the Domestic Security Division Liu Yang and Yang Haifei, officers from the Bajiao Police Station Zhao Minglong, and others searched Ms. Xu's home and seized her personal property.
Mr. Wei Shijun 40 was a photographer at the Institute of High Energy Physics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Mr. Wei started practising Falun Gong in 1992. In July 2002, police from the Shijingshan District in Beijing arrested him. After he had been detained for one year, Mr. Wei was sentenced to eleven and a half years in prison. The temperature during the winter of 2002 was below freezing. The administrators of the detention centre did not allow Mr. Wei's family to deliver any winter clothes to him. He had to survive the winter in his summer clothes. The guards in the detention centre frequently shocked him with electric batons. Mr. Wei is now in critical condition in Qianjin Prison. He has liver and kidney diseases. His diastolic blood pressure is above 100. He has lost most of his hair. Qianjin Prison officials are aware of Mr. Wei's poor health but publicly stated that they would provide no medical care. They refused the medicine provided by Mr. Wei's family and their request for his release due to health reasons. Qianjin Prison officials are watching Mr. Wei die before their eyes.
