Ms. Li Guilian, Age 70, Arrested by Daqing Police

On June 2nd, 2008, when 70-year-old Ms. Li Guilian of Daqing City, Helongjiang Province, sat down to rest near the Honggang Courthouse, four male police officers and one female police officer from the Honggang Police Sub-bureau surrounded and frisked her. They took four Falun Gong badges from her and then arrested her.

In the Honggang Police Sub-bureau, Ms. Li was interrogated and told to confess who sold her the Falun Gong badges, what she was doing there, and if she had any Falun Gong materials in her home. She did not tell them anything, including where she was from.

In the afternoon, Ms. Li was recognized by policeman Lin Shui from Babaixiang Police Station. Four officers grabbed her house keys. At about 2:00 p.m., Lin Shui and four other officers went to search her house, but they could not open the door with the key. They waited at the entrance to the building, and when they saw Ms. Li's daughter, they tried to fool her. "Go up and check your father to make sure he is OK. See why he did not get the door." But Ms. Li's daughter didn't fall for this. At 5:00 p.m., they asked a neighbour to knock on the door, but the neighbour refused.

At 7:00 p.m., Ms. Li Guilian's daughter went to the Honggang Police Sub-bureau to ask for her mother's release. She was intimidated into signing some papers by the policeman in charge. Ms. Li was also forced to sign the interrogation record, give her fingerprints and have her photo taken. She was finally released at about 10:00 p.m., on bail, pending investigation.

Ms. Li Guilian was detained at the Honggang Police Sub-bureau for over 12 hours, causing her much psychological and physical distress.
