Mr. Han Qingkun was a teacher employed by the Shengli Petroleum Field Middle School in Shandong Province. In late 2006, he was doing the Falun Gong exercises in a motel when he was arrested by officers from Xuanwu District Police Department and later sentenced to two years of forced labour, which he served in the Xuchang City Forced Labour Camp in Henan Province. During his first two months of detention, he was inhumanly tortured, causing him to develop cirrhosis of the liver. The camp administration didn't notify his family, nor did they allow him to be bailed out on medical parole. They released him when he was dying, on February 17th, 2007 (Chinese New Year's Eve). His family could hardly recognize him. His hair and moustache were grey, his abdomen was bloated, and his buttocks flesh had an infected wound. His clothes were all in pieces. He had a high fever and remained unconscious. He died at home, one month after his release, on March 30th, 2007, at the age of fifty-two.
There were around 60 Falun Gong practitioners detained in Xuchang City Forced Labour Camp, and 14 of them were transferred from Beijing, including Mr. Han. The practitioners were all tortured by being punched, kicked, beaten with rubber batons, and tied up with nylon ropes. Prisoners were encouraged to rampantly torture practitioners, using methods such as beating them with wooden clubs, pouring cold water over them, cursing them, and forcing them to do slave labour for 13-15 hours each day.
