While Ms. Liu Hailan and five other practitioners, all from Fujin City in Heilongjiang Province, were distributing information exposing the persecution of Falun Gong in the neighbouring town of Erlongshan on the evening of August 21st, 2008, they were chased by a police patrol car. Three of the six practitioners managed to escape.
When the police intercepted the remaining practitioners, three officers jumped out of the patrol car and drew their guns. The practitioners were immediately arrested, put in the patrol car, and driven to the Erlongshan Town Police Station. That night, two practitioners managed to walk out of the police station, but Ms. Liu, who is almost 60 years old, is being held in the Fujin City Detention Centre.
This is not the first time that Ms. Liu has been arrested. Twice before she was detained in forced labour camps for refusing to renounce her belief in Falun Gong. She was last released in late February 2005.
Ms. Liu's husband, Mr. Xu Zhongrang, has also been arrested twice since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started persecuting Falun Gong. His first arrest resulted in a two-year forced labor sentence, and his second arrest took place on March 24th, 2005, and resulted in a six-year prison term in the Jiamusi City Prison.
Ms. Liu's daughter, Ms. Xu Zhuo, has also served two years of forced labour for telling people about the persecution of Falun Gong. Just last month, CCP officials arrested her again, using the excuse of "maintaining stability during the Olympics Games." She was released only after CCP officials had extorted money from her husband.
Ms. Liu previously suffered from a very serious illness. But for the past ten years, since she's been practising Falun Gong, for she has been illness free.
When her family and several neighbours saw the miraculous healing power of Falun Gong, they too started practising.
Mr. Xie Xuepu of Shangjieji Town, Fujin City, was arrested at home by officers from the Shangjieji Town Police Station, in order to "maintain peace during the Olympics Games."
In the Fujin City Detention Centre, the police brutally tortured Mr. Xie by repeatedly force-feeding him, which caused him to vomit large amounts of blood. When they tried to transfer him to the Harbin Forced Labour Camp, the camp officials refused to accept him due to his poor physical condition.
As a result, he was sent back to Fujin City. Instead of releasing him, as they should have, they used the Olympics as an excuse to detain him until August 9th, 2008.
