The methods of torture currently used on Falun Gong practitioners in Wulumuqi Women's Prison in Xinjiang Autonomous Region include the following:
1. Incarcerated drug abusers are instigated to to beat steadfast practitioners. Each practitioner is monitored by a particular inmate assigned by the prison authorities, Practitioners are forced to stand for long periods of time. They are deprived of sleep and are not allowed to go to the toilet--sometimes they end up soiling themselves. They are not allowed any family visits nor to make any phone calls. Ms. Pu Chun has been detained four times and imprisoned a total of three years. Currently, she is in a confined cell. She was tied to a bare bed and not allowed to take a shower. Both her hands and legs were restrained, her mouth was covered, and she was repeatedly shocked with electric batons.
2. Steadfast practitioners are only allowed to spend 30 yuan1 once a month to buy things. (Since September of this year, they are not allowed to buy any food except some daily necessities.) Practitioners are monitored and separated and have access to absolutely no outside information.
3. The guards often instigate inmates to beat practitioners that refuse to hold up their fist to swear to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) flag. It is commonplace for inmates to twist practitioners' arms or legs. Sometimes their teeth were knocked out, and they were not allowed to buy daily necessities, as a form of abuse.
4. The guards of the special division that persecutes Falun Gong practitioners claim that they put education as a priority, while, in fact, this is the division that imposes slave labour. Practitioners are forced to work long hours, sometimes as many as 23 hours per day. They are forced to produce sanitary pads for which the prison produces falsified order sheets and invoices.
5. The prison authorities conduct coercive brainwashing sessions with fabricated information. They force practitioners to watch videos that slander Falun Gong as a form of mental torment. If practitioners refuse to watch, they will be tortured physically. One practitioner was physically abused during the day, and, in the evening, the guards forced her to watch preposterous videos to brainwash her. She was not allowed to sleep, and several drug abusers beat and berated her at night. She has been enduring this treatment for over two months now.
6. Physical abuse. One practitioner has been physically abused since May of this year. She was not even allowed inside the cell. Another practitioner was forced to stand in the so-called psychiatric consultation room from June 11th to September, and she was never allowed to leave that room. Still another practitioner that was forced to stand for 24 hours a day ended up with her legs so swollen that she could not wear any shoes. This practitioner was forced to stand outside for 40 days. Another elderly practitioner was brought in on August 18th, and she has been forced to stand ever since.
Note
1. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.
