The Huanggu District Detention Centre is located in Santaizi, Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. It detains the many male Falun Gong practitioners who were arrested by the Shenyang City Police Department, the Shenyang 610 Office1, and other police stations in the Huanggu District. The practitioners arrested include Zhao Zhanbo, Chen Xinye, Zhao Guoliang, Cai Zongbin, Zheng Yi, and Lin Huaiyu. Many practitioners held hunger strikes to protest the persecution and were brutally force-fed by guards.
1. Zhao Zhanbo Detained for Seven Months and Will Soon Face Trial
Zhao Zhanbo |
Mr. Zhao Zhanbo, 38, lives in Shenyang City. He was the associate general manager of the Kaisa Business and Sales Department for the Shenyang Spacecraft Northeast Materials Supply Station. In 1996, he started practising Falun Gong and benefited in both body and mind. The kidney stones and chronic stomach disease he had suffered from for many years subsequently disappeared without treatment. He always followed the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance and worked without complaint. He received many achievement awards for his work. Every year, he brought in millions of yuan2 in profits to the sales department. The leaders of his company and his colleagues praised him highly.
On May 24th, 2008, with the excuse of "maintaining harmony for the Beijing Olympic Games," the National Security Team of the Shenyang Police Department dispatched all of its forces to arrest about fifty practitioners in Shenyang City in one night. Zhao Zhanbo was one of them.
On May 24th, 2008, Mr. Zhao was in his mother-in-law's neighbourhood. About a dozen officers from the Shenyang Police Department and the Santaizi Police Station of the Huanggu District beat him until he fell to the ground. They then handcuffed him, and pushed him into a police vehicle. Many local residents witnessed this outrage. Three policemen took his keys and later searched his home when no one was there. They confiscated a computer, a copy machine, Falun Gong leaflets exposing the persecution, CDs, a wedding ring, tens of thousands of yuan in cash, bank books, and other valuables. The police also took the company vehicle he had been given and are holding it to this day.
The next day when his mother-in-law opened the door, she was shocked by what she saw. The whole room had been turned upside-down. Used meal boxes and cigarette butts were all over the floor, mingled with dirty footprints.
Six Shenyang policemen secretly took Mr. Zhao to a room in the Gaodeng Hotel in Shenyang City and beat him for three days and nights. They then took him to the Zhangshi Brainwashing Centre in Shenyang City. According to Shi Fengyou, who was in charge of the brainwashing centre, when Mr. Zhao arrived at the centre, his handcuffs and shackles were so heavy that he could not walk up stairs by himself. Shi Fengyou made it clear that Mr. Zhao's injuries were not caused by brainwashing centre personnel--it was the corrupt officers with the city police department who beat him. There were black bruises on his head, face, wrists, and arms.
In the brainwashing centre, Mr. Zhao was not allowed to sleep. Three people surrounded him and kept repeating wicked phrases defaming Buddha principles. Mr. Zhao was not disturbed and insisted on sitting cross-legged in the meditation position. They tried to forcibly uncross his legs several times, but failed.
Four days later, Mr. Zhao was transferred to the Huanggu District Detention Centre, where he remains to date. During the detention, his family and the leaders of the company he worked for went to visit him many times, but they were not allowed to see him.
According to insiders, in the detention centre, Mr. Zhao was emaciated, his face was pale and his eyes were glazed over. He walked very slowly and always was the last one to get meals.
Mr. Zhao's wife has quit her job and returned from another city. She and their ten-year-old daughter now have a hard time getting by. Mr. Zhao's wife suffers from a prolapsed lumbar inter-vertebral disc, but is still busy running around between the detention centre, the court, and other places. According to judge Lin Fenglei (female) of the Huanggu District Court, who was put in charge of the case, a session will be held shortly, and Mr. Zhao will definitely be sentenced. The only thing to be decided will be his term of imprisonment.
2. Chen Xinye's Whereabouts Unknown, His Parents Desolate
Chen Xinye |
Mr. Chen Xinye, 32, comes from Santaizi. When he was young, his mother was mentally unstable, so he was not well cared for. He was thin and weak, felt inferior, and was reserved. In 1997, he had the good fortune to learn Falun Gong. He followed the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance and understood the significance and purpose of being human. Not only did he become healthy, but he also became outgoing and considerate.
When he worked in a hotel, he was very diligent. His boss and co-workers liked him. In 2004, he went to Shenyang to do business selling hand-made dumplings and sausages. Since the dumplings and sausages he made were of good quality and he never added preservatives or dyes, the business was very successful. In April 2008, he took an "Internet administrator" job in a clothing company, and his boss was very happy with his performance.
At 7:00 a.m. on May 24th, 2008, Mr. Zhao's wife, Chen Lihui, was about to go to work. Zhao Guoqi, Xu Deyong, Han Jinying, Li Qian (female) and about ten officers from the Shenyang Police Department, the Huanggu Police Department, and the Santaizi Police Station suddenly rushed into their home. Five or six of them pushed Ms. Chen Lihui into the room on the south side of the house and handcuffed her. Four or five other officers broke into the room at the north end, grabbed the sleeping Mr. Chen Xinye by his hair, and handcuffed his hands behind his back. He asked the police to let him get dressed, but they refused. They forced him to kneel down, stuffed his mouth with a cloth, and covered him with a quilt. Mr. Chen's nine-year-old daughter was so frightened that she was quaking.
The police learned the location of his warehouse from his neighbour. They confiscated a desktop computer, a laptop, a CD burner, three printers, Falun Gong books, 2,900 yuan in cash, and other personal property. According to the police, they filled two vans with all of the things they took. Afterwards, Mr. Chen Xinye was taken to the Huanggu District Detention Centre in Shenyang City.
On October 27th, 2008, Mr. Zhao's family went to the Huanggu District Detention Centre to bring him warm clothes. Policeman Du, who received them, said that Chen Xinye had been transferred to the Liaoning Province Detention Centre on October 14th, 2008. Mr. Chen's parents went to the provincial detention centre to visit their son. However, the guards told them Mr. Chen wasn't detained there, either. Mr. Chen's father is about 70 years old and has heart disease, and his mother is still mentally unstable. Mr. Chen's family inquired at several places to find information about him, but to this day don't know his whereabouts.
Mr. Chen's father has lost his appetite because of the ordeal and is sick in bed. His mother's mental illness has also worsened.
3. Mr. Zhao Guoliang and Mr. Cai Zongbin Imprisoned for Six Months--Their 80-Year-Old Mothers Long for Their Return.
Mr. Zhao Guoliang, 53, lives in the Hongxing Residential Area, Nanshuncheng Road, Shenhe District. He was a carpenter for the Shenyang Cold Stretch Steel Materials Factory. Before practising Falun Gong, he was bad-tempered, but after practising, he benefited both physically and mentally, and became more kind hearted and righteous.
On the afternoon of June 16th, 2008, Wu Bo and Li Wei, along with a dozen officers from the Shenyang Police Department and the Yaming Police Station, beat and kicked Mr. Zhao for more than an hour and then took him away. That night, officers from the Yaming Police Station beat Mr. Zhao again. He shouted "Falun Gong is good!" The police stuffed him into a cage wrapped with plastic foam. There was only a small hole and it was very hot. The next day, Mr. Zhao's hair was totally wet with sweat, and his handcuffs cut deeply into his hands. His hands had turned bluish from being handcuffed for such a long time. Mr. Zhao Guoliang has been detained in the Huanggu District Detention Centre. He went on a hunger strike once and was brutally force-fed.
Mr. Cai Zongbin, 48, lives in the Hongxing Residential Area, Nanshuncheng Road, Shenhe District. He was a paint sprayer for the Shenyang Pressure Cooker Factory. Before practising Falun Gong, he liked to drink and smoke. He often played cards, ate, and drank with his friends whenever he was off work. Since he began practising Falun Gong, he follows the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, and has changed drastically. He has abandoned the habits of drinking and smoking, and became more filial to his mother.
On June 16th, 2008, officers from the Shenyang Police Department and the Yaming Police Station arrested Mr. Cai. They took the keys to his home and searched it. Because they found no valuables, they returned empty-handed.
The mothers of both Mr. Cai and Mr. Zhao are about 80 years old. They miss their sons and go around asking for their release. They suffer mental anguish.
4. Mr. Zheng Yi and Mr. Lin Huaiyu
On June 16th, 2008, officers from the Shenyang Police Department and the Yaming Police Station also arrested Mr. Zheng Yi and Mr. Lin Huaiyu. They are being detained in the Huanggu Detention Centre.
Mr. Zheng Yi is in his thirties. He lives in Huanggu District, Shenyang City. His parents were divorced many years ago, and he has always lived alone. In July 2003, he was arrested and sent to the Zhangshi Forced Labour Camp for one year of forced labour.
On July 23rd, 2008, the Huanggu District Procuratorate issued arrest warrants for Mr. Zhao Guoling, Mr. Cai Zongbin, Mr. Zheng Yi, Mr. Lin Huaiyu, and two other practitioners. In order to sentence them to from three to seven years of imprisonment, the Procuratorate returned their cases to the police department for so-called "supplementary investigation." The police department has since returned their cases to the Procuratorate.
