On December 29, 2001, Guo Ping and her husband, Liu Peidong, were at home when several policemen from the Ershilipu Police Station of Kuiwen District broke into their house and kidnapped them. The couple was held in the Detention Centre of Kuiwen District. The court opened a trial once and was going to sentence them. The detention centre police escorted Liu Peidong, who is from Weifang Gaomi City, to the hospital where Guo Ping had been taken. There, he witnessed his wife's swollen hands and feet that were a result of the torture. After he returned to the detention centre, he started a hunger strike, protesting the police's inhuman, brutal torture.
