Ms. Zhang Chunhe Has Been Detained for Seven Months, Now in Serious Condition

Ms. Zhang Chunhe, in her fifties, is a practitioner from Zengcheng, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. She was arrested at work seven months ago and is currently in serious condition in jail.

On July 23rd, 2008, agents from the Zengcheng 610 Office¹ and officers from the Xiyuan Police Station arrested Ms. Zhang Chunhe and took her to the Chatou Brainwashing Centre in Guangzhou City. She was rejected by the centre on July 24th, after her physical exam showed that she had multiple tumours. Completely disregarding her health status, the police detained her in the Xiyuan Police Station, handcuffed and shackled her. Ms. Zhang was not allowed to eat, drink, or use the toilet. As a result, Ms. Zhang suffered from nephrohydrosis. When she was transferred to the Zengcheng Detention Centre, she had whole body oedema and was in critical condition. Six people had to carry her into the detention centre. On September 18th, 2008, Ms. Zhang was admitted to the Guangzhou City Armed Police Hospital.

According to previous prison patients, the hospital's living and medical conditions are much worse than a prison. Prison patients are treated badly. Ms. Zhang is now in serious condition. Her face has darkened and her hair has turned white. She has high blood pressure. Her tumours are growing and causing her sharp pain. She has lost so much weight that she has to hold up her trousers when she walks to keep them from falling off.

Concurrently, the 610 Office continues to harass Ms. Zhang's family. Their phone calls are monitored, as are their homes and their whereabouts. The officers said to Ms. Zhang's mother: "You don't want to say anything... telling anyone about what's happened is useless." The director of the 610 Office, Wang Jianlai, pressured Ms. Zhang's son through his employer, threatening to have him fired if he spoke out for his mother.
