Ms. Guo Yunling Persecuted for Five Years in a Women's Prison in Henan Province

Ms. Guo Yunling from the Pingdingshan City, Henan Province is nearly 60 years old. Guo Yunling was arrested in July 2004. Three months later, she was sentenced to a six-year prison term and at present, is still detained in the No. 5 Women's Prison in Xinxiang City.

Ms. Guo is a former employee of Pinggao Group Ltd, Henan Province. In 1997, she started to practise Falun Gong. Falun Gong gave her a completely new outlook on life. Since then she has followed the principles of Truth-Compassion-Forbearance. In next few years, the diseases that plagued her most of her life disappeared, and her family and friends are amazed at the changes.

After the persecution started, Guo Yunling decided to go to Beijing on December 20th, 1999 to appeal for Falun Gong to relevant government departments.

She was arrested and detained in the Beijing Office of her local government. Then a few policemen forcibly ransacked Guo Yunling's home without showing any documentation. They rummaged through chests and cupboards and took Falun Gong books and also extorted 5000 yuan¹ from her in the form of a bond, which has not been returned to this today. One week later, police transferred Ms. Guo Yunling to the No. 1 Detention Centre in Pingdingshan City for six months.

On April 1st, 2002, with the help of the security section of her workplace, Ms. Guo Yunling was detained again and was also sentenced to one year of forced labour by the Forced Labour Committee of Pingdingshan City and was sent to Shibalihe Forced Labour Camp of Zhengzhou City for brainwashing.

Around 3 p.m. on April 27th, 2004, Guo Yunling spoke to people about the persecution of Falun Gong and was arrested by Zhao Xinchao and Qi Yunchao and detained in No. 1 Detention Centre of Pingdingshan City. During the detention, she was put in handcuffs and shackles and held with criminals and drug addicts. No one was allowed to visit her and she was forced to stand, recite prison regulations and eat very poor quality food. The broth with vegetables had flies, mosquitoes and a disgusting smell. One's body would develop oedema shortly after eating such mouldy food. But even before the detention, Ms. Guo Yunling was also followed, intimidated, monitored and harassed by the security section at her workplace along with the local residents' committee and some security staff who went to her home many times.

On July 22nd, 2004, the court in Zhanhe District didn't allow people to observe, nor did they allow a lawyer to defend her. They sentenced Ms. Guo to the notorious No. 5 Women's Prison of Xinxiang City for five years. Guo Yunling has an eighty-year-old mother and two daughters living with her.

The No. 5 Women's Prison authorities in Xinxiang City encourage prisoners to discriminate against Falun Gong practitioners and they also harass the families of Falun Gong practitioners. Since they can get a generous bonus for every Falun Gong practitioner that they "transform²" through brainwashing, the guards in the prison don't spare any effort to persecute Falun Gong practitioners.

The No. 5 Women's Prison has a rule that families and prisoners can eat together if they pay for their food, but Falun Gong practitioners are denied this right. Practitioners' families are not given enough time to talk with them and can only talk through a phone while other prisoners monitor them. The prison wants to stop international investigations and also prevent prison staff from learning the truth, so all mobile phones in the prison are blocked.
