Hundreds of people travelled from as far as Toronto to "share the joy," as they celebrated World Falun Dafa Day on Parliament Hill Wednesday.
The practitioners and supporters of Falun Dafa - an Asian-rooted system that teaches people to incorporate truthfulness, benevolence and forbearance in their lives - held a parade in the downtown core, followed by music and dance performances on Parliament Hill "to share the happiness," said volunteer Steven Liu.
Liu, a Toronto Transit Commission driver, has been practicing Falun Dafa since 1998 and it changed his life, he said. It's made him feel calmer and more peaceful, he said.
While Falun Dafa has practitioners from more than 80 countries around the world, there are hundreds in Ottawa alone, said event organiser and volunteer Grace Wollensak. She said the event got support from politicians on all levels, including Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who sent his greetings, and Acting Mayor Michel Bellemare, who proclaimed Wednesday Falun Dafa Day in the city of Ottawa.
