Practitioners Peng Weisheng and His Father Have Been Detained for One Year in Wuhan City, Hubei Province

Practitioners Peng Liang and Peng Weisheng, father and son, from Wuchang District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province, were arrested by police on May 28th, 2008, under the guise of safeguarding the Beijing Olympics. The police also ransacked their home, tortured and interrogated them, and put them in a forced labour camp. The father was sentenced to a year and a half, and the son to a year of forced labour. They are currently detained in Ward V of Hewan Forced Labour Camp in Wuhan City.

Since Jiang Zemin's [former leader of China and instigator of the persecution] regime and the Chinese Communist Party began their suppression of Falun Gong on July 20th, 1999, Mr. Peng Weisheng's family has been persecuted. His family is broken and his son, Peng Min, was tortured to death in prison because of his steadfast cultivation in Falun Gong. Mr. Peng's wife was killed by the police when she tried to expose the torture committed against her son.

Eyewitnesses have testified that the police brutally beat Peng Min on January 9th, 2001, crushing his fifth spinal bone and neck bone, causing his complete paralysis and later his death on April 6th, 2001. His mother Li Yingxiu died in the same hospital on April 29th. Mr. Peng found many cuts on her head, and there were blood clots in her mouth. The police told him that she died because she talked too much after her son's death.

In July 2001, Mr. Peng Liang authorized fellow Falun Gong practitioners in the United States to sue Zhao Zhifei, the director of the Police Bureau of Hubei Province, charging him with the crime of torturing, detaining, and causing the death of Falun Gong practitioners in Hubei Province. Zhao was also charged with crimes against humanity, and the violation of other international human rights laws. Zhao received the court summons in New York City. On December 21st, 2001, Magistrate Denise Cote of the U.S. Court tried Zhao in absentia and convicted him in the fifty million dollar civil case against him.

Here we appeal to the international human rights organizations and urge them to pay close attention to practitioners' safety and help to stop the persecution.
