Mr. Shao Xingbao and His Wife Persecuted by the Jiaonan City 610 Office

Mr. Shao Xingbao, a practitioner in Jiaonan City, Shandong Province, was sentenced to four years in prison by the Jiaonan City Court at 2 p.m., on April 24th, 2009. On the afternoon of May 8th, his wife, Ms. Wang Lifang, was arrested by the Beijing Road Police Station.

Mr. Shao was previously arrested and sentenced to prison for practising Falun Gong. He was arrested again in the afternoon on February 24th, 2009, by the Beijing Road Police. His wife, Ms. Wang, asked to visit him many times at the police station, detention centre, and police department. She was turned away each time.

The Jiaonan City Court did not disclose the April 8th court date to Mr. Shao's family. After Ms. Wang got the information by asking at many places, she visited the procuratorate and the court, including Chief Judge Liu Jinren, and stated that her husband was innocent. The Jiaonan City 610 Office¹ used all sorts of dirty tricks to prevent Ms. Wang from hiring lawyers to enter a "not guilty" plea. Ms. Wang entered a plea of not guilty in the court by herself.

In the second trial on April 24th, Chief Judge Liu Jinren announced that the court was adjourned right after reading the sentence. The whole process lasted less than twenty minutes. Mr. Shao refused to sign the written judgement and asked for an appeal immediately.

On April 27th, Wang Yajun and Li Chunfu, lawyers from the Beijing Gaobolonghua Law Firm, took the case at his family's request. They met Mr. Shao at the Jiaonan City Detention Centre. While he was in detention, Mr. Shao developed high blood pressure. The Qingdao Haici Hospital evaluated his health and suggested he be released on medical grounds. The detention centre, the 610 Office and the court ignored the doctor's recommendation.

Ms. Wang asked the 610 Office to release her husband for medical reasons. The 610 Office claimed that they were not aware of Mr. Shao's health condition, and collaborated with an office in the police department to force her to drop her request. Ms. Wang was then arrested by the Beijing Road Police.
