The Guangdong Province "Legal Education Centre" is actually a grim place established for the purpose of "transforming1" Falun Gong practitioners, trying to force them to give up their practice by brainwashing and persecuting them. Those in charge came up with a set of tactics to persecute practitioners in order to destroy their spiritual lives.
Assigning a "Personal Spy" to Monitor and Deceive Practitioners
I was arrested in 2008. The police assigned other inmates to monitor practitioners. Practitioners are even forbidden to stand by the cell door and converse with anyone except their personal spy or to respond to any questions. Every day, the inmates monitor and report the practitioners' every word and deed to the police. In order to find out practitioners' states of mind and weaknesses to thereby better control them, the police usually have a "conversation" with practitioners on the first few days after their arrest. They then use deception and other means to "transform" practitioners by targeting their weaknesses.
Several days after the initial arrest, the monitor will tell the practitioner that the police in charge in the center are all professionals that are good at "transforming" practitioners. They can judge at first sight whether a practitioner has been really "transformed" or not. If they see that the practitioner hasn't been completely "transformed", he or she will not be allowed to return home but will be sent to a forced labour camp for further brainwashing. The police also advise that the practitioner must be 100 per cent transformed, otherwise he or she will not be allowed to return home. This what they they say to threaten and deceive practitioners, and it creates enormous mental pressure.
Instilling Fallacies and Absurdities, Forcing Practitioners to Write the Three Statements
After the practitioner becomings emotionally stable, the police uses fallacies and absurdities from the Chinese Communist Party to brainwash and "educate" him or her. Every day, they force practitioners to watch or read different videos and books that talk about Falun Gong's founder with contempt. Afterwards, they force the practitioner to write a report. If the report doesn't meet their requirements, the practitioner has to rewrite it.
During this period, the police take turns talking to practitioners every day. Practitioners are forced to talk about their understandings of Falun Gong until what is being said meets their requirements. Sometimes, they send several collaborators2 to instil fallacies and absurdities into practitioners. Once what the practitioners say meets their requirements, they force the practitioners to write the Three Statements3.
Forcing Practitioners to Report One Another in Order to Destroy More Practitioners
After writing the Three Statements, practitioners are then forced to write "confessional materials." The confessions must contain everything, from the beginning of cultivation to the last moment before their arrest, which includes the names of those who introduced Falun Gong to the practitioner, all the other practitioners this practitioner has had contact with, what the practitioner did during this period, and the people whom the practitioner knows that also practice Falun Gong and provide materials. If a practitioner refuses to write the "confessional materials," the police ask, "How is it that you haven't contacted anyone in such a long time? Don't you read any materials?" They tell practitioners that they don't believe them and will check for the actual conditions in their local area.
There was a practitioner whose persecution information was posted on the Minghui/Clearwisdom website on the second day after her detainment. Since she didn't report fellow practitioners, the police told her that her confession was not accurate and that the 610 Office4 had filed charges against her in order to force her to reveal the identity of fellow practitioners. If the confession doesn't provide enough information, the police will not accept it and try to force the practitioner to reveal more, encouraging the practitioner to feel that his or her release is dependent on the satisfactory results of the confession.
Using an "Examination" to Force Practitioners to Give Up Cultivation
After finishing the Three Statements and confession, a practitioner faces an "examination" designed to force them to give up their cultivation. Once a practitioner meets the requirement, he or she is transferred to a "consolidation group." There the practitioner has to endure three months of "consolidation brainwashing." They are required to write a weekly "experience report." Sometimes they are even required to take several sets of exams, the contents of which consists of many words attacking Falun Gong.
After these initial three months, they will again give the practitioner an examination. Only if they parrot the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) propaganda will they pass this exam. Then the brainwashing centre will notify the 610 Office or the police station in the practitioner's local area to take them back. On the day they come to take the practitioner, the police in the legal education centre will once more give the practitioner an exam. After they are satisfied, the brainwashing centre signs a contract with the local 610 Office or the local police station and the practitioner, which requires the practitioner to write five "Thought Reports" after his or her release in the first three months, the sixth month, and the 12th month, and to mail it to the brainwashing center. This is how the CCP relentlessly attempts to destroy the spiritual lives of Falun Gong practitioners.
Note
1. "Reform or Transform" Implementation of brainwashing and torture in order to force a practitioner to renounce Falun Gong. (Variations: "reform", "transform", "reformed", "reforming", "transformed", "transforming", and "transformation")
2. "Collaborators": former practitioners who have turned against Falun Gong under brainwashing and torture. They are then made to assist in brainwashing and torturing practitioners.
3. "Three Statements": Practitioners are coerced under brainwashing and torture to write "Repentance Statement," "Guarantee Statement" or 'Dissociation Statement" as proof that they have given up their belief. In the statement, the practitioner is forced to admit remorse for practising Falun Gong, promise to give up Falun Gong, and never again associate with other practitioners or go to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong.
4. "The 610 office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems.
