Ms. Zeng Lingwen, 74, is a retired professor of physics who taught at Jilin University. She was arrested repeatedly for being a Falun Gong practitioner and taken to the detention centre, the drug rehabilitation centre and the forced labour camp in Changchun City.

In the middle of July 2009, officials from the Changjiu Road Police Station in Changchun City came to Ms. Zeng's house to make an "in-home investigation." Seeing Falun Gong materials in the house, the police began to search everything and took away her personal belongings including her pension money. The police subsequently took Ms. Zeng to the police station for further questioning.

On August 27th, officials from the Changjiu Road Police Station sent Ms. Zeng to the Chaoyang District Procuratorate, where she was subjected to questioning by a prosecutor. The personnel in charge of the case lied to Ms. Zeng and claimed that they would help her. They sent the case to the Chaoyang District Court. The court and the Procuratorate then sent the case to the Changchun City Intermediate Court without any trial process. Ms. Zeng's counsel was informed that they were forbidden to make an innocent plea.

Ms. Zeng was a hard-working professor who had made remarkable achievements in her teaching endeavours and science research. Prior to practising Falun Gong, Ms. Zeng suffered from multiple illnesses including arthritis, hyperostosis, heart disease and low blood pressure. She tried all kinds of medical procedures, but they had little effect. She began practising Falun Gong in 1992, and all her illnesses were cured within a short period of time. Her disposition also changed. Ms. Zeng used to be hot-tempered but since following the principles of Falun Gong, she has become an even-tempered person.

Since July 20th, 1999, when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started to persecute Falun Gong, Ms. Zeng has been repeatedly arrested. On July 23rd, 1999, officials from Changchun City arrested Ms. Zeng and took away Dafa books and materials. In addition, the police sent her to the drug rehabilitation centre. While there, the police forced her to undergo "mental education" and tried to force her to give up Falun Gong. Six police officers took turns interrogating Ms. Zeng and deprived her of sleep. One officer said that if she refused to abandon Falun Gong, she would be sentenced to prison or even death.

On September 23rd, 1999, Changchun 610 Office¹ agents ordered Ms. Zeng arrested without explanation. She was held at the Balibao Detention Centre and later sent to a drug rehabilitation centre, where she was detained for 49 days.

On February 9th, 2002, Ms. Zeng was sent to the brainwashing centre set up by the Changchun City 610 Office. She strongly resisted all brainwashing attempts, and over a month later she was transferred to the Changchun Third Detention Centre. Following that, the police gave her two years of forced labour and sent her to the Heizuizi Women's Labour Camp in Changchun. Ms. Zeng resisted the persecution and her term was extended by 40 days after the two-year term was completed. After Ms. Zeng's term expired, the 610 Office planned to send her to a brainwashing centre, but their attempt failed under Ms. Zeng's and her family's strong protests. She was eventually released.

After Ms. Zeng returned home, her personal freedom was still restricted because personnel from the local police station and the neighbourhood committee often sent people to harass and monitor her. In the intervals between her three arrests, there were always plainclothes agents monitoring her and her family. At one point, Ms. Zeng moved, but personnel from the police station in her new area still repeatedly harassed her.
