Ms. Yang Manye Arrested Repeatedly in Putuo District, Shanghai

Ms. Yang Manye is from Putuo District, Shanghai. At approximately 9:00 a.m. on October 22nd, 2009, people from the Putuo Domestic Security Division and 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) deceived Ms. Yang, saying that they needed to talk to her. In fact, they arrested and took her to a brainwashing centre. So far, her family has not received any written notification about her arrest.

This is the fourth time she has been arrested for practising Falun Gong. Her family asked officials from the police station where she was, but they told them she was arrested by the Putuo Domestic Security Division. Her family then went to the Putuo Domestic Security Division, but could not find her. Finally the family went to the local Legal Appeal Office to protest this arrest, but Wang X, the head of the office, told them that Ms. Yang had been released on bail with restricted movement in order to wait for a trial. He also told her family that if they refuse to accept this, they could take legal action, but it would be useless.

Ms. Yang Manye has been persecuted repeatedly over many years. In January 2001, she was arrested by Putuo Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials when she was distributing Falun Gong materials about the persecution. She was detained in the Putuo District Detention Centre of Shanghai for nine months prior to her sentence to four years in prison. She was jailed in the Songjiang Women's Prison in Shanghai and the authorities extended her term by nine months. When she was in prison, she was forced to do physical work for long hours. Because of this she was very weak and fell. As a result, her knees had comminuted fractures and had to be operated on twice. Many methods are used by the CCP to torture Falun Gong practitioners, such as sleep deprivation, not letting them go to the toilet or take a bath, locking them up in a small cells, force-feedings, tying them up, extending their terms, and so on.

Within six months of her release, in January 2006, Ms. Yang Manye was arrested and detained for one and half years when she was distributing leaflets exposing the persecution and telling people the facts about Falun Gong in the Putuo District. Her home was also ransacked.

In the morning of June 6th, 2009, more than a dozen local CCP officials broke into Ms. Yang's home, arrested and detained her in the Putuo Detention Centre for one month.

Only four months later, she was arrested again. Because of these occurrences, her father-in-law, mother-in-law, her husband and son have endured a lot, both mentally and physically. Her mother-in-law is nearly 80 years old. Currently, she has to take care of her grandson even though she has hypertension and diabetes.
