Ms. Li Caiping was secretly handed a four-and-a-half-year prison term on October 20th, 2009, for the second time. She had been sentenced to three years in prison beginning November 2005. She was subjected to gross abuse and mistreatment at the Zhejiang Province Women's Prison.
Ms. Li was followed and arrested when she was speaking with people about Falun Gong in a residential area on June 11th, 2009. Shortly after, more than a dozen police officers broke into her home and ransacked it. They took CDs, an MP3 player, and other personal belongings. They took Ms. Li to the Yuyao City Detention Centre, where she was subjected to gross abuse for four months.
Yuyao City Court officials secretly sentenced Ms. Li to four-and-a-half years in prison on October 20th, 2009.
Since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Li Caiping has endured several incidents of persecution. The first arrest took place on April 19th, 2000, while when she was sitting in a park. She was said to be doing the Falun Gong exercises. Yuyao City Police Department officers held her in administrative detention for two weeks. She was arrested and detained again on April 1st, 2000, for going to Beijing to appeal for the right to practise. Her home was ransacked. Dongnan Street Committee staff went to her home to intimidate her in August 2003. They claimed that if she refused to write a guarantee statement to give up her belief in Falun Gong, she would be sent to a brainwashing facility. She eventually decided to leave home for over a month to avoid further harassment.
Ms. Li was also arrested on October 18th, 2005, for hanging a banner reading "Falun Gong is good." She was given a three-year prison term in November 2005 and sent to the Zhejiang Province Women's Prison. Eight inmates tortured her for ten straight days. They beat her, banged her head against the wall, and kicked her genital area. Ms. Li was tortured so badly that she became emaciated and was in low spirits.
