Ms. Liang Zhiqin, 58 years old, is a retiree from the Tangshan Iron and Steel Company. She had worked in the company's Marketing Department. Ms. Liang had many illnesses before she started to practise Falun Gong. She first heard about the practice when on sick leave. Within six month of practising Falun Gong, all of her chronic illnesses disappeared, and she became energetic again.
When the persecution began in 1999, Ms. Liang went to Beijing's Appeals Office several times to appeal against the persecution of Falun Gong. She also wrote letters to different ministries telling them about the great benefits of Falun Gong. On September 21st, 1999, because Ms. Liang went to Zhongnanhai to deliver an appeal letter, she was arrested. On September 22nd, she was sent to the Tangshan Number 1 Detention Centre by the Lubei Branch of the Tangshan Police. Later, Ms. Liang was directly sent to the Kaiping Forced Labour Camp for a two-year term.
In the autumn of 2000, Ms. Liang Zhiqin and several other Falun Gong practitioners were taken to the Tangshan City Ankang Hospital because they refused to give up their belief in Falun Gong. They were tied to the Death Bed1 and were injected with toxic drugs. Among the practitioners, Ms. Liang Zhiqini suffered the most severe injuries from the torture. She was twice injected with the toxin.
The first injection immediately knocked Ms. Liang unconscious. The drug gave her acute cardiac problems, and intense chest pain woke her up in the middle of the night. Ms. Liang recalled, "I was woken up at midnight by a sharp pain in my heart. I was disturbed by my own groans from the pain. Two criminal inmates pinned me down, and tied my hands and feet to the bed frame. Words cannot describe the pain I felt. My heart was very tight and was about to burst. I struggled desperately and felt that the sky was going to collapse. I was on the verge of death. I was in so much pain that my eyes could not even move. My tongue became rigid, and my mind was unclear."
Within a month of the injection, Ms. Liang Zhiqin suffered three episodes of sudden loss of consciousness. Each time, her eyes and mouth were wide open, and she had urinary incontinence. Some medical personnel say that those are the symptoms before death and that her condition was life threatening.
The injections also gave Ms. Liang Zhiqin discomfort in her heart and back. Her hands and feet felt cold, and her circulation was abnormal. She was in much pain. These symptoms persisted for half a year. Ms. Liang could not fall asleep at night. Extra layers of clothing and blankets did not alleviate her pain at all. She endured such agony for a very long time.
Many other Falun Gong practitioners subjected to this toxic injection also developed chronic problems including heart problems, anxiety, stiffness of the tongue, wobbling gait, poor balance, and nerve lesions. The poison also harmed practitioners' brain activity and function. Some of them developed eye problems, memory loss, and serious psychological disorders. It is hard to describe the mental agony experienced by those injected with the drug. The person directly responsible for persecuting Ms. Liang is Yao Shujun, who has been reassigned to the Number 1 Detention Centre as an assistant director and is in charge of persecuting other Falun Gong practitioners.
In late 2000, Ms. Liang Zhiqin was in the Kaiping Forced Labour Camp. The authorities tortured her with electric batons for a long time. At that time, Wang Jianzhong, a police officer in the Kaiping Forced Labour Camp, slandered Falun Gong and ordered Ms. Liang Zhiqin to kneel down for him. When Ms. Liang Zhiqin refused, Wang Xueli and five other male police officers pinned Ms. Liang Zhiqin to the ground and used three electric batons to torture her.
Among the persecutors, Wang Xueli was the most vicious; he had used electric batons to shock several Falun Gong practitioners to unconsciousness. Wang Xueli pressed the electric baton against the back of Ms. Liang Zhiqin's head and neck to shock her central nerve system. Ms. Liang Zhiqin sustained big blisters and bumps on her head from this torture. The torture degraded Ms. Liang's mental abilities. For several days thereafter, female police officers were sent in to observe Ms. Liang to estimate the damage to her central nervous system. Ms. Fei Cuirong, another Falun Gong practitioner from Qian An, had also sustained electric shocks to her central nerve system in the Kaiping Forced Labour Camp. Ms. Fei had fainted several times from the torture.
Ms. Liang Zhiqin was released in September 2001. The toxic injections and electric shocks to her head and neck have caused severe, long-lasting injuries that impede Ms. Liang's daily life. She can no longer help her family do business. Her memory has worsened significantly, and she cannot remember many things. Ms. Liang often gave people the wrong change.
Other than her most severe persecution experience, Ms. Liang cannot describe the other persecution she had suffered. Since 2003, Ms. Liang Zhiqin has had pain radiating from several organs in her body, including the heart, liver, spleen, stomach, and intestines. She has felt sharp piercing pain in her back and kidney area. Sometimes she cannot sit or lie down or close her eyes in a day. Ms. Liang has very laboured breathing. She is often disoriented and has blurred vision. Her brain was severely deprived of oxygen. Ms. Liang vomits often and sometimes she cannot even drink water.
At the time of this article, Ms. Liang Zhiqin has lost over 70 pounds and weighs only about 60 pounds. She often feels dizzy and suddenly faints. Her body is full of injuries. Ms. Liang has little energy and can do almost no work. Her family is deeply impacted by the persecution of their loved one.

Note
1. "Death Bed" torture: A practitioner is tied to a bed with his hands handcuffed above his head to the bed rails, and his legs tied with thin nylon ropes. The rope is then tightly wrapped around the practitioner's body and the bed, from his legs to his chest. The rope is wrapped so tightly that the practitioner has difficulty breathing and eventually loses consciousness.
