The Persecution of Three Falun Gong Practitioners in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province

Since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began its persecution of Falun Gong openly in July 1999, the Zhanjiang City 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) in Guangdong Province has subjected tens of thousands of people to various forms of persecution. For practitioners living in the four areas and five counties subordinate to Zhanjiang City, the 610 Office forced them to go through brainwashing sessions or to practise Buddhism. Those who firmly refused to give up their belief were sent to forced labour camps in Sanshui, Yangjiang, and Hainan, or detention centres in Potou, Mazhang and Xiashan. During the past two years, CCP authorities have developed many more brutal means to torture practitioners, causing them enormous bodily injury and mental trauma.

Below are a few methods used on three practitioners in Zhanjiang City.

1. The Gross Abuse and Mistreatment of Ms. Liang Rongfen, in Her 70s

Ms. Liang Rongfen is retired from the Huguang Farm in Mazhang Town, Zhanjiang City. After she took up the practice of Falun Gong in 1995, all her illnesses, including back pain, rapid heart-beat and dizziness, were gone. Since 1999, however, she has been arrested and detained numerous times, suffering extreme physical and mental trauma.

Ms. Liang went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practise Falun Gong on December 24th, 2001. As soon as she arrived in Tiananmen Square, several policemen surrounded her, asking if she was a Falun Gong practitioner. Even before she could finish her sentence, they pushed her into a police van, already containing more than a dozen practitioners. The police shocked some of them with electric batons and kicked and punched them, leaving bruises everywhere on their faces and bodies.

Ms. Liang was driven to the Chaoyang Police Station. As she was trying to step out of the van, a tall policeman shoved her even before her feet touched the ground. She fell hard and suffered serious injuries. Four days later, Zhanjiang local police officials took her back to the Donghai Police Station in Zhanjiang City, where she was detained for more than seven months.

A year later, Ms. Liang went to the Nanyou area in June 2002, to distribute Falun Gong materials and was reported. Agents from the Nanyou Police Station arrested her and sent her to Sanshui Forced Labour Camp to serve a one-year term. She wrote a guarantee statement to renounce Falun Gong against her will and wasn't released until about one year later.

In August 2005, Chikan 610 Office head Huang Zuhua and more than ten police officers broke into Ms. Liang's home, seized her, and threatened her family. In the end, they took her to the local brainwashing centre located in Zhanjiang City Legal School.

At the beginning of 2007, Ms. Liang was reported again while distributing materials. The local authorities sentenced her to one year and sent her to the Mazhang Detention Centre. While there, she explained the facts to the guards and criminals. She also persisted in practising the Falun Gong. This enabled certain people to see the wonders of Falun Gong practice. Since she firmly refused to give up her belief, just several days before her term expired, 610 Office agents transferred her to a local brainwashing centre for further persecution. She asked why this was happening. She pointed out to the persecutors they were violating the law while enforcing the law. They were rendered speechless. That night her heartbeat suddenly increased abnormally. The next day her family came asking for her release. Only then did the guards set her free.

2. The Torture and Torment of Ms. Li Tongying

Ms. Li Tongying, 46, was an engineer with a company in Zhanjiang City. Her husband was forced to divorce her. Only her elderly parents in their 70s live with her.

Ms. Li has been arrested and sent to forced labour camps since July 1999 on many occasions. She was forcibly taken to a local brainwashing centre several times, the most recent in April 2009. Because she was determined in her belief, the guards at the brainwashing centre tortured her. Brainwashing centre head Fu Shaoqun and his subordinates surrounded and attacked her both verbally and physically. They kept her under 24-hour surveillance. They made her sit on a small bench day and night without sleep.

Due to the long-term torture, Ms. Li couldn't keep any food down. Her once-healthy body was reduced to skin and bones. She couldn't stand or walk. Only then was she allowed out of the confinement cell. Seeing that she still couldn't eat, the guards sent her to the Zhanjiang Hospital for treatment. The doctors discovered that she had a brain haemorrhage and a damaged kidney. They kept her in hospital for further treatment.

3. The Persecution of Ms. Lu Rongying

Ms. Lu Rongying is retired from Huguang Farm, Mazhang Town, Zhanjiang City. She once suffered from asthma, skin and foot problems, as well as from sinus ailments. Her illnesses vanished after she began the cultivation practice in 1997. She was arrested numerous times after the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999.

Ms. Lu was distributing Falun Gong information in Guandu Town, Zhanjiang City, in December 2003 when she was reported and subsequently arrested by Guandu Police Station agents. They sent her to a local brainwashing centre where she was held for 12 days.

Shortly after the Chinese New Year in 2005, Ms. Lu was explaining the facts of Falun Gong in a store and was reported. She was once again arrested by Guandu Police Station agents who kept her at the Mazhang Detention Centre for three months before transferring her to the Sanshui Forced Labour Camp to serve a two-year term. The labour camp officials discovered she had high blood pressure and refused to accept her. The police had to take her back to the brainwashing centre. Under intimidation and pressure from Li Yu, brainwashing centre head Fu Shaoqun, and 610 Office head Chen Jun, Ms. Lu wrote statements giving up her cultivation against her will. They didn't release her until three months later.

Ms. Lu distributed information about Falun Gong and the persecution at the end of 2006 in Liangtong Town. Liangtong Police Station agents again arrested her and once more took her to the local brainwashing centre. 610 Office head Chen Jun tried many times to have her divulge the sources of her informational materials. She was held there for three months.
